School Program Off to a Good Start

The 2014-2015 school year at UPWARD began on Monday, August 11th. The parking lot was full of buses from several school districts around the valley dropping off their students for a full day of special education, therapy and nursing services in our three classrooms. This school year marks 30+ years of UPWARD  providing these services in a private day school setting for children with special needs.

Create a Memory

Jasov’s Creative a Memory will be to participate in Hippotherapy (adapted horseback riding) with our physical therapist, Gail Pauly, at Hunkapi Horse Programs once the weather cools down! He will also be going to ZooLights at The Phoenix Zoo as his mom says he loves lights! Jasov’s child care teachers and physical therapist nominated Jasov for this quarter’s Create a Memory, saying he is an adorable 4 year old who would benefit from the movement on the horse during Hippotherapy as well as the visual stimulation from ZooLights! Jasov’s mother, Merissa, stated that, “although every memory with Jasov is a special one, it means a lot to both of us that others feel Jasov deserves special memories as much as I do. We appreciate everything UPWARD does for us!”

Water Day was Huge Success!
Children in our outpatient therapy clinic had a great time playing in the sprinklers on the back patio during the month of July. They played with water balloons and water tables in addition to eating snow cones! This was a great way to incorporate therapy goals with an element of summer fun!

Super Hero Week at UPWARD

The week of September 15th was Super Hero Week! The clients in the therapy clinic came dressed as their favorite Super Hero! The therapists and front office staff joined in the fun as well!
UPWARD Board of Directors Continues to Grow

Musical Mystery Tour

The first annual Musical Mystery Tour fundraiser was held Saturday evening, October 4, 2014, on the DeVry University Sky Patio, overlooking Westgate, with a spectacular view of the West Valley. It was presented by the Glendale Civic Pride Ambassadors Foundation, and was a great success! The goal of the Musical Mystery Tour was to raise money for Upward for Children and Families, whose mission it is to “bring joy and hope to the children we serve.”
“We are very pleased to say we raised $6,608 for the great work Upward does,” said Nancy Lenox, president of the GCPA. “This was our very first event, and once our friends and neighbors met the folks from Upward and saw what a great night out we presented, our future events will only get better!
“The food was wonderful, donated by nine of Glendale’s most popular restaurants. The music was performed by the talented and diverse Pete Pancrazi Trio, among the valley’s most highly acclaimed jazz groups – all for the benefit of these children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities and their families. Glendale Communications Director and television personality Julie Watters, did a stellar job as our Master of Ceremonies.”
Lenox added, “Among our premier sponsors were The Arizona Coyotes, Sanderson Ford, Disneyland, The Glendale Convention and Visitors Bureau, Crescent Crown Distributing and Midwestern University. Many other area businesses and individuals supported the Musical Mystery Tour with cash contributions and/or prizes for our drawings.”
