Happy 2017!

My New Year’s Resolution … And One Good Thing

For a lot of years my New Year’s resolution has been to ‘get a life,’ something ONE GOOD THING’s Madeline Singer can relate to. This desire stems from our now-empty nest and the feeling that I’m spending too much time creating lives for my fictional characters and not enough experiencing my own.
Lately, I’ve been trying to keep that resolution. Last January we moved up to New York to try out big city living. It was a grand adventure that made me fall in love with New York in a whole new way. But to live there full time in the style to which I’d like to become accustomed, will require a movie or TV deal or a couple hundred thousand more copies to fly off the shelves. I’m working on all of those things, but in the meantime I’ll have to settle for frequent visits.

I did learn a few things during our months in Manhattan. I learned that we don’t need all the square footage we’re used to. Or all the things with which we fill it. I’ve also come to believe that driving is highly overrated while walking as a part of daily life and not simply for exercise is awesome. I also discovered that as much as I love the beach (and intend to keep writing novels that can be enjoyed there) an urban setting also gets creative juices flowing.

So the discarding and choosing and packing have begun. (I don’t really need all those high school yearbooks and photos of my old boyfriends, right?) Like Claire Walker in my novel WHILE WE WERE WATCHING DOWNTON ABBEY, I’m leaving the suburbs and moving to what Atlantans refer to as ITP (inside the perimeter.) Our 37th floor condo is currently being renovated, thereby confirming my suspicion that renovation can be more fun to write about than live through. We expect to be in our new home in early February.

Once we get there I hope to make new friends and pursue the interests it’s been difficult to make time for. I also plan to write many more beach reads at my brand new sit-to-stand desk in the smaller office with the entirely different view.

I’ll keep you posted on how my ‘new’ life goes. I’d love to hear your New Year’s resolution and how 2017 is treating you so far.
