New Books! New Look!

Our newest publication, Genes & Traits, has all the things you know and love about our courses, but we’ve revamped many key features and repackaged the books to make them even easier to use.

For starters, Genes & Traits course materials are now bundled with the
Making Sense of Student Work protocol. This protocol was previously embedded in the Teacher Book as an appendix.

Check out some of the other new features below!

New introductions in the Teacher Book and Facilitator Guide provide updated user-friendly and accessible information.

The Facilitator Guide features a revised Preparation & Materials section and all new Section Overview tables to make getting organized a cinch!

Redesigned key concept boxes in the Science Reviews and Literacy Reviews combine key concepts with related misconceptions.

No CD drive? No problem! All digital content previously available on CD is now available as a digital download.

MSS Kicks Off Investing in Innovation (i3) Grant

Making Sense of SCIENCE officially launched its latest research project as part of the federally funded Investing in Innovation (i3) grant program. The project will span 5 years, beginning this year with school recruitment and the development of a brand new course — Dynamic Earth — that will focus on key concepts related to the ever-changing conditions of our planet. The project will help Making Sense of SCIENCE serve approximately 800 teachers and over 20,000 students in Milwaukee, WI and the greater Stockton region of CA.

Scientific Explanations

Students in science classes have always been expected to draft scientific explanations. The emphasis, however, has changed from formulaic lab reports to a more holistic approach that supports students’ critical thinking and sense-making skills. One tool Making Sense of SCIENCE teachers have found useful is the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) format.
