This webinar will introduce you to resources that can support your staff in helping youth learn about engineering careers, and help them see engineers as people like themselves who think critically, solve problems and help people.

This Month in Science!

February 11th: Inventor's Day
Learn about inventors and their innovative ideas from GE.  Did you know that snowmobiles, popsicles and braille were all invented by children. Let’s work together to encourage the inventors in our programs. Use #NationalInventors’Day to share on social media. Invent it, Build it is a great resource designed for afterschool program by PBS Design Squad. The recorded webinar Creating a Making and Tinkering Summer will help you be creative with the inventors in your program.


February 18th - 24th: Engineers Week
The youth in your program can Dream Big with Engineers week February 18-24, 2018. The Dream Big activities help youth understand how engineers create better lives for people across the world.  There are great resources you can use to create a Girls Night Out event, or to bring great engineering activities into you program.  Don’t forget to Register for Webinar Wednesday, Becoming an Engineer, on February 14 to prepare for Engineers week. February 27th: International Polar Bear Day
Polar bears can reach 9 ft tall and weigh 1400 pounds. Learn more about polar bears at National Geographic Kids. Polar bears are powerful swimmers and use their large front paws, which are slightly webbed, to paddle as they swim. Some polar bears have been seen swimming hundreds of miles from land. They also have traveled great distances by floating on sheets of ice. See how far polar bears travel using the polar bear tracker which shows the actual location of the bear in the Hudson Bay. Use #NationalPolarBearDay to post on social media.

All of February: Career & Technical Education Month
Career and technical education prepare students for high-wage, high-demand careers. Click2Science has great resources to help you understand the unique role afterschool programs have in supporting youth to make connections between STEM learning and STEM Careers. Use #CareerTechEd to share on social media.
Building for the Big One is a great STEM activity to help make connections to careers
. Trying Out Career Roles is a learning module designed to help staff build their skill in this area.  You can use the Connecting Skills to Careers guide to help your staff develop these skills.
