March 14th: Pi Day

Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

Explore Pi with a string. Find a circle (like a plate or a pizza), and wrap a string round the outside of the circle.  Cut it to exactly fit around the circle. This is the circumference of your circle. You can measure the string to see what the circumference of the circle is.  Now put your string exactly across the middle of the circle from one edge to the other. This is the diameter. Mark the diameter. How long is it? The diameter will fit on your circumference string exactly 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197 times.  Mark the diameter 3.14 times.

Pi was observed by ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, Chinese and Indian mathematicians You can observe it too www.exploratorium.edu/pi
