We're hiring an advocacy advisor!
Based in Geneva, Switzerland. Reports to Senior Representative of the Sexual Rights Initiative to the UN in Geneva.

Terms of Reference

Candidate Profile

  • A minimum of 3 years experience in legal and policy analysis and advocacy on human rights, including reproductive and sexual rights issues
  • A degree in a related field such as: Human Rights; Political Science; Law; International Development; Public Health and Health Policy (an advanced degree would be considered an asset)
  • Strong knowledge of global and regional human rights mechanisms and instruments.
  • Knowledge of international agreements relevant to sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • Knowledge of relevant international organizations especially the United Nations and its specialized agencies
  • Strong understanding of and demonstrated commitment to reproductive and sexual rights and health
  • Experience working with government officials, particulary diplomats and foreign ministry officials
  • Excellent writing, analytical and persuasive skills in English
  • Fluency in Spanish, French or other UN official language considered an asset
  • Flexible and adaptive, able to respond quickly and effectively to changing circumstances
  • Commitment to and demonstrated effectiveness working as part of a diverse and participatory team
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work effectively
  • Strong conceptual abilities and aptitudes
  • Strategic thinking; sound judgment and a very clear and focused approach
  • Sensitivity and a strong capacity for confidentiality, tact, discretion and diplomacy
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Preference will be given to applications from the Global South
  • Ability to work in Switzerland (in regard to visas)



  • Monitor events, developments and initiatives within the Geneva UN Human Rights mechanisms including the HRC, UPR, TMBs, HRC Advisory Committee, and Special Procedures
  • Work with and under the guidance of the SRI and the Senior Representative to identify strategic entry points for advocacy initiatives in these forums
  • Under the guidance of the Senior Representative, develop good working relations with relevant officials in UN agencies, representatives of Permanent Missions, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders
  • Under the guidance of the Senior Representative, set priorities, plan and execute advocacy strategies with UN bodies and mechanisms in Geneva, including the UN Human Rights Council and its mechanisms (e.g. UPR, HRC, Advisory Committee, and Special Procedures), UN agencies, UN human rights treaty-bodies
  • Highlight key sexual and reproductive rights issues with UN experts, including Special Procedure mandate-holders and members of the human rights treaty-bodies
  • Promote collaboration on sexual and reproductive rights and related issues through outreach to both NGOs and government, to create greater awareness and stimulate positive action
  • Provide support and assistance at SRI seminars, briefings, workshops and trainings with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Act in a collaborative and professional manner at all times

Specifically, at the:

Human Rights Council

  • Provide draft summaries of relevant UN HRC resolutions for partners and draft reports for the SRI website
  • Map existing and projected member state positions on a wide range of SRHR related resolutions at the HRC
  • Provide logistical support for SRI partners prior to and during the HRC sessions where necessary
  • Assist in the drafting of mark-up texts for states
  • Draft oral statements for delivery as and when required
  • Under the guidance of the SRI and its Senior Representative, meet with delegates from key States to influence their positions within debates and negotiations
  • Under the guidance of the SRI, represent the SRI at the HRC including on panels and at side events

Universal Periodic Review mechanism

  • Working with the Action Canada Policy and Advocacy Officer, map upcoming UPR NGO submission deadlines and assist the Action Canada Policy and Advocacy Officer in assisting partners prepare submissions meeting relevant deadlines
  • With guidance from the SRI and Senior Representative, meet with Geneva Missions to garner their support to voice recommendations of partners within UPR reviews
  • Assist the Senior Representative in preparing written and oral materials for UPR advocacy initiatives

Treaty Monitoring Bodies

  • Map upcoming TMB reviews and highlight to SRI partners the upcoming advocacy opportunities concerning LOIs, submissions and meetings on relevant SRR related issues
  • Assist in the provision of briefings on request to relevant Committee members on relevant sexual and reproductive rights issues

Special Procedures

  • Map upcoming Special Procedure country visits and highlight relevant advocacy opportunities to partners
  • Provide briefings on request to relevant mandate holders on relevant Sexual and Reproductive Rights issues
  • Analyse relevant Special Procedures reports and share analysis with SRI


  • Serve as a secondary contact point for the SRI in Geneva
  • Assist with the design, planning and running of events in Geneva
  • Where needed, draft communications on the work of the SRI, including successes and issues of interest for different audiences such as updates for website or social media and for e-mail listservs of allied organizations
  • In conjunction with the SRI and other staff, develop policy positions, briefs and statements on issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • Conduct research and writing and editing of position papers, briefs, reports and submissions on sexual and reproductive health and rights issues
  • Participate at and organize monthly and other necessary SRI meetings
  • Support the Senior Representative in the development of proposals and other fundraising activities as necessary
  • Under the guidance of the Senior Representative, represent the SRI at meetings and events in Geneva as instructed
  • Prepare regular reports on activities for the SRI
  • Participate in staff meetings and other appropriate committee meetings
  • Supervise interns and placement students as appropriate
  • Perform other duties as required
  • Perform specific duties for SRI partners, RFSU, as required
