Today is World Oceans Day, and normally, we'd have just hosted our 4th Annual Oceans Day celebration this past Saturday in Sechelt. Though we are sad to postpone the festivities, we are happy to share some of the many ways you can still celebrate, learn about our oceans, and practice the essential art of being ocean stewards. Read on for links to global and regional events and offerings, and get your friends and family together to honour our world oceans - today, and everyday! Stay tuned for news of our postponed Oceans Day offerings later this year. And Happy World Oceans Day!

Here are some fantastic ways to celebrate World Oceans Day, while doing our part to protect community health by maintaining physical distancing.

30% by 2030!
Leading scientists say we need half of the planet in its natural state to prevent the extinction of one million species, stay below 1.5°C of warming, and help humans survive and thrive. We can start by protecting 30% by 2030.
Sign the 30x30 for Nature Petition, calling on world leaders to:
"protect at least 30% of the planet's land and ocean by 2030, preserve the world's existing intact areas and wilderness, respect the rights of indigenous peoples, and ensure our living planet is sustainably managed."

Visit their event page for more information and register here.

We also recommend that you and your "bubble" consider taking a moment at some point during what we like to think of as World Oceans Month - June, to enjoy a walk along the ocean, and bring a bag so that you can do your own Great Canadian Shoreline Clean Up!

World Oceans Day Trivia! 7 pm June 8th
Get a team together and register for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society BC (CPAWS-BC) special Virtual Trivia to celebration the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean. Learn more and RSVP to save your team's spot here.

Protection for Orcas
As of June 1, 2020, measures to protect orcas in the waters of Southern BC, including keeping 400 m. minimum distance from any orca, respecting their sanctuary zones and select salmon fisheries closures, and other 'Whale Wise' procedures are in effect. Find out more about how to Be Whale Wise here, and help spread the word!

Visit World Oceans Day for other events and ideas on how to celebrate.

We're grateful for support from the District of Sechelt that makes it possible for us to bring you COVID-19 adapted Oceans Day programming later this year. Stay tuned for updates on what we have in store!
Though there are still some restrictions and COVID-19 protocols in place, most provincial parks throughout BC are now available for day-use, and some are even approved for camping, including Roberts Creek and Porpoise Bay Parks. Visit the BC Parks affected by COVID-19 website for the latest information.
Stay safe and enjoy nature!
