BC Government Offers Old Growth Consultation

Our provincial government is asking for public comments about its management of old growth forests. Follow this link to make a written submission, and/or answer questions in an on-line survey by January 31st, 2020 at 4 pm.

The SCCA strongly encourages you to participate. If we don't respond government will conclude that old growth management is not a major public concern. Wrong!  Here are some helpful position papers from the Sierra Club of BC and the Ancient Forest Alliance:

The SCCA has many concerns about management of BC's old growth forests. The Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) makes protection of all non-timber values secondary to timber supply priorities. This means that protection of old growth or old growth dependent at-risk species is only available if such does not "... unduly reduce the flow of timber from crown land." There are a lot of major problems; Landscape Unit Plans offer only tokenistic protection; Timber Supply Reviews wildly overestimate forest inventories; BC's obligations under the Species-At-Risk Act have not been satisfied and forestry operations continue as if there is no such thing as global climate change.

The SCCA will address these and many other old growth issues in a submission later this month. We will send you a copy!

ACT NOW TO PROTECT GIBSONS HARBOUR

Ask the Province to REJECT The George Crown Land Application #2411955

The George Gibsons Development Ltd has applied to the BC Government for a commercial lease to build a private commercial marina for The George Hotel and Condos on public land designated park and recreation area. The Province is seeking comment on the application.

Through this Crown land application, The George would take over the public foreshore and water lot lease adjacent to Winegarden Park, and lots at the end of Winn Road and beside Gibsons Marina.

The George also plans to take the transient moorage ‘A-Dock’ from Gibsons Marina and include this public dock in The George Marina.

Excavations and dredging to develop this project could result in catastrophic blow out of Gibsons Aquifer and spread contaminated sediments in the marine area. If this occurs it could cause irreparable damage to natural values in the harbour such as eelgrass, mollusks, crustaceans, forage fish, salmon, Great Blue Herons and waterfowl.

Please submit comments re: Crown Land Application File #2411955 via this link on the BC Government website or email to Katie.Semproni@gov.bc.ca no later than Feb. 7, 2020.
