A Word From the Presidents:

Welcome to the first week of school for 2021-22! As this year begins, the two of us have a freshman, a sophomore, and a senior in high school, as well as a freshman in college. We know that we will be wrapping up our PTA experiences in the near future, while many of you are just beginning yours. That is the beauty of PTA – it is bigger than any one of us. At 125 years old, PTA was here long before any of us were, and it will continue long after we’re gone. Our role is to build upon the meaningful work that has gone before, to leave the organization better than we found it, and to inspire others to build along with us!

Therefore, we are incredibly excited to welcome you to the first LWPTSA Council Membership Meeting of the year! Each of you are invited! One of the benefits of being a PTA in a Council, is that you have 43 other PTAs, as well as your Council leaders to network with for ideas and resources. We are here to support you and to build alongside you. When you attend Council meetings, you avail yourself of opportunities for learning and connecting with other PTA leaders who are dealing with the same challenges you are. So, we encourage you take advantage of the commitment that each PTA in a Council makes – by virtue of affiliation - to attend Council meetings. We are so excited to connect and reconnect with our PTA leaders and to continue our work of supporting each of you! This week's meeting is at 9:45 am and we have moved it to the Zoom platform.  September Membership Meeting Link   (Complete Meeting Schedule here)

Mission and Goals

It's the second day of school, and we've decided to meet from home, no need for a shower or for work clothes.  Please join us at 9:45 am for our first membership meeting of the year.  We'll hear from Dr. Holman, we'll share important information about upcoming events, we will be voting on various items, and we also hope to be holding elections.
Please join us as we kick off a great PTSA year!
We are excited to see you at 9:45am, Thursday, September 2.

Presidents & Principals

Save the date for our Presidents and Principals Workshop on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 10:00am. Presidents and Principals is a once-a-year event hosted by LWPTSA for all schools in our district. Each school is required to send either their Principal or an Associate Principal to this event, so please ensure your PTA is represented. This is a collaborative event between PTSA and LWSD and is a great way for PTAs and principals to start off the year on a strong footing.

Want to be in the Know?

Provide with us your contact information so we can send information directly to the appropriate board members and chairs.

We've created a streamlined way for you to share your board and chair contact information with us. We know that a few of you have sent this information to Council earlier in the year, and to WSPTA, so we appreciate your patience in filling out this contact list with the most up-to-date, accurate information. Please take a few minutes to fill out this form with the names, titles, and email addresses of each of your PTA Board members and chairs. Only one person from each PTA needs to fill out the form, but please do ensure that it is filled out with your most up-to-date information. Click here for PTA Survey.

In addition to the twenty PTAs that have already updated their Board Contact Information, this week we want to thank the PTA leaders from Blackwell, Clara Barton, Rose Hill MS, Alcott, Redmond HS, Twain, Carson, Peter Kirk, Sandburg/DCS, Juanita Elementary, and Dickinson Explorer for updating your contact information! We only have 13 PTAs that still need to update - and school hasn't even started yet!

Way to go PTAs! Over the last week we have trained more than 70 PTA leaders!  Currently, we do not have any trainings scheduled, but please let us know what classes would be most helpful to your board and we will try to schedule them.

Need training? LWPTSA Council is always happy to host training for your entire board all at once. Drop us a line!  Find lists of WSPTA-approved training classes we can provide on our website.

As you may know, one person from each PTA Board is required to attend the WSPTA training, PTA and the Law, at least once per year.  Please register here for the next session: PTA and the Law  You will learn an incredible amount of important information (and increase your points for awards applications!), become even better trained, and of even greater support to your students and families.

Membership Matters

Do you have your PTA membership goals set for this year?  Have you reached out to previous years' members to invite them back? Are you working with your school administration to help promote your PTA to all incoming and new families in your school?  This year will be different than last, and as always, PTA membership matters.  Parents belong in the PTA and so do teachers, students, relatives, neighbors, and friends!  Spread the word! As you launch your membership campaign, you can follow the steps in these easy how-to videos for help to navigate Memberplanet and you can access a range of resources in the National PTA's membership toolkit.
The Autumn Leadership Launch will have both a Membership Training class and a Membership Round Table for PTA leaders.

Questions? Email membership@lwptsa.net

Membership Subsidies

As we spend this year reconnecting with our communities, one way in which we can support all families is by having our PTAs offer membership subsidies.  Earlier in the year WSPTA issued guidance on how to create and offer membership subsidies.  Check out our website for more information: Membership Dues Subsidies

Reflections

We are excited to kick off our Reflections program to encourage our creative minds for 2021-22 with the theme "I Will Change the World Bb..." and LWPTSA Council will host an orientation meeting on September 27th at 7pm. We are looking for 1 or 2 volunteers who are inspired by our students to chair our Reflections program. Interested individuals can contact Anuraga Gowtham and Cris Wegmann, our Co-VPs of Programs, for more information.

Welcome to our New & International Families

Our 5th annual welcome event for new and international families takes place virtually on Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 10am to 1pm. Join us for information about navigating our school system - topics include academic support, social-emotional support, PTSA support and more. If you have questions, please email FACE@lwptsa.net

Sustainability

LWPTSA's sustainability committee is made up of chairs from PTAs across the district. The committee meets monthly during the school year. The September 2021 Sustainability Committee meeting will be held online Monday, September 13, 2021 at 11am. If you’re interested in learning about sustainability efforts at various schools across the District or you are a Sustainability Chair for your PTSA, we encourage you to attend! Please send questions to Council Sustainability Chair Nirali Shah

Avoid PTA events on Religious Holidays

As you schedule your PTA's various events for the year, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the religious festivals, holy days and holidays that your community celebrates, to avoid conflicting with an important day for your families. This inter-faith calendar is just one of many helpful resources available on the internet.

LWSD Volunteer Program 2021-2022

Lake Washington School District recognizes the value of volunteers and their contributions to our students’ education and our District mission. We hope to be able to welcome volunteers back into our schools in the Fall. We are currently in discussions regarding Governor Inslee’s recent vaccination mandate for volunteers and how to comply with the requirements. We will provide more information shortly.

Please remember, all volunteers in the schools will need to be an approved LWSD volunteer, follow the current masking and physical distancing requirements, sign-in at the school office and follow any vaccination mandate processes.

It is important to keep volunteer approval status current, to be ready to volunteer whenever possible.   Parents, relatives and community members (including vendors for enrichment programs) can complete an online application quickly through Raptor.

The LWSD Volunteer Program Supervisor tracks and reviews all applications, can check volunteer status, generate a list of approved volunteers for PTSA purposes, and if your PTSA is having trouble recruiting volunteers, email all the approved volunteers for your school.

Here are a few reminders about the volunteer application process:

  1. Volunteer applications are good for two years.

  1. Volunteers who are approved can log into their Raptor Volunteer Portal to check the expiration date of their volunteer application.

  1. Volunteers can also contact Chris Robison (crobison@lwsd.org) to check on volunteer status.

  1. Reminder emails will be sent out 30 days before an application is due to expire. Due to some email filters, this email may go to the Junk folder. A search for the name “Raptor” will locate the email.

As mentioned above, PTSAs can request a list from Chris Robison of approved volunteers for their school. This list will contain the names of the volunteers and the expiration date of their application.

The volunteer department’s peak time is mid-August through mid-November. During this time, it can take up to two weeks to process an application.

Use the Peachjar eflyer program to advertise your PTA events

PTSAs can use the Peachjar eflyer program free of charge to help recruit volunteers or advertise events. Flyers are emailed to all parents at the designated school(s) and are posted on the Peachjar webpage.

  1. Please refer to the Flyer Guidelines and Requirements for PTSAs, ASBs and Booster Clubs found on the LWSD website. Click on the “Community” header, then find “Advertising in LWSD”. The third paragraph is specifically for PTSAs and Booster Clubs.

  1. Create a flyer and save in a pdf format.

  1. Fill out a Flyer Submission Form for PTSAs and Booster Clubs, also found in the same paragraph as the flyer guidelines.

  1. Email your flyer and the submission form to your school Peachjar uploader if you’re targeting your own school. If you want to reach other schools in addition to your own school, email the flyer and the submission form to Chris Robison (crobison@lwsd.org).

If you have any questions, please contact Chris Robison at 425-936-1270.

Return to School for PTA Leaders

The Lake Washington School District would like to share information around volunteers and PTAs in schools this fall in order to comply with health and safety requirements and to keep students and staff safe, while at the same time recognizing the importance of PTA events to our schools.
Key Points:
  • Outside gatherings are acceptable for PTAs, as long as participants follow current health and safety guidelines regarding masking and distancing.
  • School-wide events, held by the PTA or the school, that include families, at this time should be held virtually if they cannot be held outside. Events such as grade-level events that are not school-wide are allowed at this time.
  • Inside school buildings, everyone, including volunteers, needs to be masked - regardless of vaccination status.
  • While volunteers will be welcome on school property, currently, adult volunteers will not be working in classrooms in order to minimize the number of people in close contact with each other on our campuses.
  • PTAs are asked to hold off on making plans for before- and after-school enrichment programs until we can work further with LWSD on guidance around if and how those can work in our school buildings during these times.
  • More information will be shared as it becomes available.
