March 9, 2020
Lake Washington PTSA Council is working in partnership with Lake Washington School District to respond appropriately to King County Public Health recommendations regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19). Over the next month multiple Lake Washington PTSA Council events will be rescheduled, canceled or held virtually. Lake Washington PTSA Council is investigating virtual meeting options and will share findings. Washington State PTA has also provided guidance on virtual meetings. Please reach out to your Area Vice President or any member of the Board with questions.

March Membership Meeting

Our March 5th membership meeting was canceled and an information-sharing session was held via an online video conferencing tool. Note this was not a business meeting, as we didn't have member participation. The recording of that presentation is available here. All business that would have been conducted during the meeting will be addressed at our April meeting. Next meeting: Thursday, April 2, 7:00 - 8:30 pm

Safety & E-Prep Night - Postponed

In light of the recent King County Public Health recommendations on large gatherings, we have decided to POSTPONE our Safety & Emergency Prep Night that was originally scheduled for March 25. We will reschedule and share details via our website, social media and in future newsletter issues.

Padres Unidos Por La Educación with support from Redmond High School PTSA, Lake Washington PTSA Council and Lake Washington Schools Foundation is presenting a series of parent education talks in Spanish during the month of March.

LWPTSA Scholarships Available

The Lake Washington PTSA Council is pleased to roll out its 2020 Scholarship Program! Each year in the spring, Council offers several student scholarships and two $500 staff scholarships. This year’s Student Scholarship Program will include 13 scholarships of $1,250 each.

Applications for both staff and student scholarships are due by NOON on April 2, 2020. The Scholarship Program is funded by money raised at the Council’s annual Scholarship Basket Auction, by annual donations from the 44 PTSAs in the LWSD and LWEA, and by donations from the greater community.

The 2020 Census: What Does it Mean for Families?

2020 Census Join us and complete the #2020Census. Why? Because there's importance in being counted. Every household has the option to complete the questionnaire online, through the mail or by phone.

2020 Washington State PTA Convention

Save the date for the 2020 WSPTA Convention and training event at the Lynnwood Convention Center, May 15-17, 2020. Watch the WSPTA website for further details.

March is National Reading Month

 A lifelong love of reading begins at home with your family. As Emilie Buchwald once said, "Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." Use these four ideas to bring your family reading experiences to life next month. Read the article from National PTA's Our Children magazine.

March Board To-Do List

  • Survey membership to identify priorities for the coming year and inform budget planning.
  • Consider providing volunteer recognition with a Golden Acorn or other WSPTA individual award
  • Treasurer should recruit a budget committee to draft next year’s budget. Committee should be approved by the board.
  • Make plans to attend WSPTA Convention in May in Lynnwood.
  • Was your PTA incorporated in March?  If so, then your annual Corporation Renewal is due on 3/31. The annual corporation report is due regardless of your PTA’s annual income and is separate from the Charitable Organization Registration/ Renewal.
