October 2020

From the Executive Director

The Caring Center heartDear Friends,

As I reflect on 2020, it has been a year of challenges, surprises, and triumphs.

The pandemic created major challenges with food shortages, business closures, employers offering less hours and layoffs to name a few.

The Caring Center remained open the entire time distributing food to those in need despite the coronavirus outbreak. We saw nearly a 20 percent increase in food distribution during this challenging time.

And despite being in the midst of a pandemic, our volunteers stepped forward to deliver food to the sick and elderly and to assist with the Senior Mobile Food Pantry.  They also organized mobile sorts to safely process clothing donations.

With enormous heart and vision, the members of the Western Boone FFA took on a leadership role and provided milk and meat to their communities, including The Caring Center, during the food shortages.

Donors called with words of encouragement, and surpassed previous financial giving to help neighbors in need.

The Caring Center has seen many individuals who were already struggling to keep their bills current and stay food secure that were adversely affected by COVID-19.  People like Sally who is a single mother with diabetes and no transportation. Keeping food on her table would have been impossible without the help of The Caring Center. Our weekly food deliveries of fresh produce, milk, and eggs made her life a little easier. And John, whose health is failing, receives a weekly call from The Caring Center to check-in and to ask about his food needs.  John says the call is something he looks forward to, and it “starts my week off with a smile.” John ends the call with these words: “Stay safe and thank you for all your help.”
Our pledge to Boone County is simple: to continue to help those who are food insecure and guide them toward self-sufficiency.  Because of your giving, we were able to help everyone who reached out in some way. And going forward, we will work in partnership to make this upcoming holiday season better for so many:  together we are stronger.
Please consider a donation to help The Caring Center and Happy Holidays!

We Are Gradually Reopening
The Caring Center is undertaking steps to gradually reopen its food pantry to the public. Beginning Monday, October 26, 2020, the staff will be seeing one family at a time in the food pantry (masks will be required). Shopping carts will be sanitized between each use, and The Caring Center staff will wear mask and gloves.
Starting in November, The Caring Center will deliver to the sick and elderly once a month on the first Tuesday of the month, but exceptions may be made for emergency situations. Please contact The Caring Center if you or someone you know need a delivery.
The Caring Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday, October 22 and 23, 2020, to prepare for reopening.
