ESL Classes for parents start on Tuesday!

ESL Classes are Coming!
Starting on Tuesday, January 15th at 8:50 a.m., there will be an Orientation and Assessment for parents interested in taking free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Peterson. Free classes will be held on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8:50-9:50 a.m. starting on January 22nd - Espanol and Arabic.  Limited childcare will be available during the sessions.

This opportunity is provided through a partnership between Northeastern Illinois University TESOL Program (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), the PAC, the BAC, and Friends of Peterson.

Childcare for ESL Classes

Are you available to assist with childcare during ESL classes at Peterson?  Please contact Catherine at if you are available to assist on Tuesday and/or Friday mornings from 8:50-9:50 a.m.

Literacy Night is January 31st!

Literacy Night is returning to Peterson on January 31st!  Join us to share the love of literacy through read alouds in English and Arabic, Bingo for Books, a book swap, literary performances by middle school students, and much more!

We will have a dinner available from 5-5:30 with sessions for the whole family to enjoy beginning at 5:45.

Are you available to help with setting up the event, serving dinner, assisting with the book swap, etc?  Please
sign up to help us in making this event a success! 
Literary Character Contest

If your children dress up as their favorite literary character, they'll win a participation prize and the possibility of winning a gift certificate!
Learn about the aldermanic candidates' positions on January 24th at 7:00 p.m. at the Irish American Heritage Center.
Book Swap

Do you have children's books that you no longer want? Did your child finish with some of his or her Bernie's Book Bank books? Please bring them to Literacy Night to share with others.  And don't forget to bring a bag to grab some new treasures!

If you are unable to attend Literacy Night, but want to donate books, please drop them inside the Main Entrance at Peterson during the week of January 28th.

The PAC was created to help support the role of parents and the school as equal partners in children’s education. The primary purpose of the PAC is to empower parents to inspire and assist their children in achieving their educational goals.

Picture Day

Peterson Picture Days are coming next week! Kindergarten through 4th grade will have their pictures taken on Thursday, January 17th with 5th through 8th grade on Friday, January 18th.  Volunteers are needed to help the picture-taking go smoothly.  Please sign up here if you can spare an hour or more on Thursday or Friday to assist!  Picture retakes will be on Tuesday, February 5th.

February PAC Meeting

The February PAC Meeting will feature Dr. Rachel Birmingham-Hoel from Northeastern Illinois University, who will discuss ways to talk with kids about current events and what is happening in the news.  Please plan to join us on Thursday, February 7th at 8:45 a.m. in the Cafeteria.
afterHours Session 2 Registration Forms

AfterHours registration forms are due on Monday, January 14th to apply for a spot in the second session.  The session lasts from January 28th-March 28th with confirmations of program enrollment sent home in backpacks on January 22nd.
