Helping Children Cope

This Tuesday morning, March 8th at 8:35 a.m. in the Peterson Cafeteria will be a special joint PTA and PAC meeting focused on understanding child development and grief as well as how to assist kids in coping with loss.  We will have a presentation from faculty within Northeastern Illinois University's Child Advocacy Studies Program who specialize in these fields.

In addition, parents will have an opportunity to speak individually with mental health professionals about concerns or questions regarding their children's reactions to the tragedy.  The PAC has also purchased a small lending library of books about grief for parents to borrow and read with their child(ren).  Books will be available at the meeting to be borrowed for one month and then returned to the PAC.  Those unable to attend the meeting can e-mail to request a book.

If you would like to see a list of recommended books and other resources to help children of various ages cope with loss, please
click here to see the NCTSN Resources for Parents and Caregivers or visit the Dougy Center: National Center for Grieving Children & Families page here.  Sesame Street also has a number of helpful resources for families, in both English and Spanish.

We will have Spanish translation at the meeting and will provide breakfast (as well as toys for our youngest attendees).
Unity Through the Arts & Sciences
As most of you are aware, Unity Through the Arts & Sciences was cancelled on February 26th.

The PTA and PAC are working together to combine STEM + Art Night, which was previously planned for May 24th, with Unity Through the Arts & Sciences.  More information, including the new date, will be available soon.
LSC Deadline Extended

Local School Council Elections will be taking place on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. The deadline to complete an application has been extended to Friday, March 18, 2016.  Applications and further information are available in the Main Office or by visiting the CPS LSC Page.

Parent Member Candidates must have a child enrolled at Peterson.  Community Member Candidates must live within the neighborhood boundaries, but not have a child currently enrolled in the school. If you know of a good candidate for the LSC, please encourage them to run!

Do you want to better understand the role of the LSC within the school?  Check out

The PAC was created to help support the role of parents and the school as equal partners in children’s education. The primary purpose of the PAC is to empower parents to inspire and assist their children in achieving their educational goals.
