A Year in Review

Can you believe the year is almost over?

2016 has seen some exciting changes for PlusLife. The most significant being, that after many years of planning and angst about the future of PlusLife, construction of our new facility in Midland has finally begun.

We have had many supporters along the way, who kept the belief in PlusLife going all these years and assisted us to successfully make our case to the State Government. With the $10m allocated in the 2016 State Government budget, we can build this new facility on the Midland property owned by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority. With the long term lease we have negotiated, we have now secured a permanent home for PlusLife; and the continuation of our service to the state well into the future.

We are extremely thankful to everyone who has supported PlusLife in this journey and especially grateful to the State Government; without their $10m funding commitment, PlusLife would have been forced to close with our life-changing services being lost to the state.

We moved our office staff to Midland in September and it has been a busy time with staff traveling between two sites. There has been barely the slightest glitch in workflow and no interruption to our service - and I thank our committed staff for their efforts.

2017 is going to be an even busier year, but won’t it be great to be preparing to move into our new facility!

Building Update

PlusLife held its ‘ground breaking’ ceremony in Midland on Monday 21 November.

Health Minister John Day, Planning Minister Donna Faragher and Member for Midland Michelle Roberts MLA joined our Managing Director Anne Cowie to turn the first sod on the site, to mark the beginning of the building works for our new bone and tissue processing facility.

Graft recipients Harry O’Neill and Angus Hollington, who each received graft from PlusLife during surgery for bone cancer, were also in attendance and happily told their story to the media present.  We were very pleased to have received lots of media coverage from the day.

It was announced at the ceremony that local construction company PS Structures was awarded to tender for this project. They have certainly hit the ground running! The existing carport structure and fire escape at the rear of the building have been removed already and the courtyard area has been transformed to make way for new start-of-the-art building, which will include purpose-built cleanrooms, freezer storage space, and testing and research laboratories.

We anticipate that the site works, footings and retaining walls will be completed before Christmas. We look forward to keeping everyone up to date with progress, so keep an eye out for news and photographs on our Facebook page!

Thank You Day

Thank You Day was held on Sunday 20 November at Sir James Mitchell Park in South Perth.

With beautiful weather and a lovely ceremony, it was a perfect day to acknowledge and honor organ and tissue donors and their families.

This event was held Australia wide and in WA it was hosted by Donor Families Australia and proudly supported by PlusLife, Organ & Tissue Authority, Lions Eye Bank, Coles and Nexus Risk Services. Coles South Perth store donated the sausages and salads and cooked the barbecue, which was fantastic and we thank them for their contribution.

Member for South Perth John McGrath MLA acknowledged the great gift that donor families make and enjoyed meeting and hearing the stories some of the families present.

At the conclusion of the formalities, families and recipients were invited to each release a white dove which was a lovely touch.

PlusLife looks forward to supporting this event again in 2017.
