Meet Sally

A life changing story

After living in crippling pain with scoliosis since the age of 16, Sally was facing the prospect of living in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

Sally was housebound and unable to walk or cuddle her grandchildren.

Three years ago, the 56-year-old mother-of-three had a life-changing spinal fusion, all thanks to the person who donated their femoral head after hip replacement surgery.

Since her spinal operation, Sally’s life has totally transformed. She has a new lease on life and is extremely grateful to the donor and to PlusLife for producing the graft she received.

This years donors:

To date, in 2017 we have had 131 people generously donate their femoral heads (ball part of the hip joint). Donated femoral heads are milled to surgeons specifications and used to treat people like Sally. We have also had two cadaveric donors whose families agreed to donate to whom we are deeply grateful.

This year, 147 units of PlusLife grafts has been sent to surgeons to treat 79 people, drastically improving their wellbeing and mobility.

Our Donor Liaison Team

PlusLife has 5 Donor Liaison Officers, all Registered Nurses, whose main role is to recruit bone donors from people having routine hip replacement surgery. Hospital pre-admission clinics and surgeon’s rooms refer patients booked for hip replacement to our Donor Liaison staff who then approach patients to discuss the idea of voluntarily donating bone.  Most patients readily agree to donation and willingly complete the required health questionnaire.

The Donor Liaison staff screen the health information provided and where necessary, work with other agencies such as General Practitioners, Pathology laboratories, specialists and hospital medical records departments to ensure a complete medical history is obtained.  Not everyone is able to donate because of the very strict exclusion criteria associated with bone donation.

The Donor Liaison staff have the pleasure of meeting all bone donors a couple of days after their surgery when they can complete the paperwork process and let them know their bone was successfully collected.

PlusLife Target Tokyo 2020 Squad

WA Olympic Hopefuls

PlusLife has teamed up with Athletics WA to sponsor a group of talented WA athletes aiming for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This was decided as a great way to promote our work, while increasing the potential number of West Australian-based athletes selected for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Track and Field Teams.

The PlusLife Target Tokyo 2020 Squad will target emerging WA athletes who fall above the Athletics Australia Target Talent Program and below WA Institute of Sport/National Athlete Support Structure program scholarships.
It comes after two reviews identified that the area was in need of immediate attention due to a lack of support in recent years.

PlusLife are thrilled to have two athletes from the Squad become PlusLife ambassadors. Marc See and Matt Felton will help rally the call for people to discuss organ and tissue donation and to register their donation wishes on the Australian Organ Donor Register.
Marc and Matt will be at our Golf Day in May and we are very happy to have them on board!

Wedding Bells!

Erika from our Donor Liaison team is getting married this weekend and taking leave to honeymoon in Hawaii. She will be back at work in early April.
Congratulations Erika, we wish you all the best!
