New Parents Handbook!  Everything you always wanted to know about SLSC, but were afraid to ask!

Concussion Protocol

A new Ontario law regarding concussion safety, called Rowan’s Law, has recently been passed. This law is not just for sailing.  It applies to all sports activities in the province. Section 3 of the Act addresses concussion codes of conduct and came into force on July 1st , 2019.

As a result, we will need all sailors and their guardians to do the following:

1) Confirm they have read a Ministry Approved Concussion Awareness Resource:
  • Concussion Awareness Resources Ages 10 and under - CLICK HERE
  • Concussion Awareness Resources Ages 11 to 14 - CLICK HERE
  • Concussion Awareness Resources Ages 15 and up - CLICK HERE
 2) Confirm they have reviewed, and committed to, the Ontario Sailing Athlete Concussion Code of Conduct: Ontario Sailing Concussion Code of Conduct - Athletes

This will be incorporated into the registration process the next time you register your sailor.

You will notice that the legal requirement is to have both the sailor and parent/guardian confirm that they have read the resources and committed to the code of conduct. Given the young age of many of our sailors, each parent should review the materials and determine how they want to have their child understand the issue.

SLSC Merchandise

SLSC Merchandise will be available to purchase every Monday and Friday morning from 8:30-9:30am at the SLSC. Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club's
2019 Capital Campaign

Our docks and landing areas are rapidly deteriorating, and despite regular patching and repairs, are now at the point of requiring replacement, to ensure the safety of our sailors and staff.

We are making a special appeal to help us to pay for our new docks,  in order to accommodate our growing numbers of sailors, our large fleet of boats, and the large number of visitors we get for our biannual regattas, in the safest possible way.

The total estimated cost of repairing and replacing our docks is $135,000, over two years. We are contributing $25,000 from the capital fund that we have been replenishing since the Boathouse was completed and are fundraising for the remaining $110,000. We have already received a grant of $25,000 from the McLean Foundation.

We have also just received a grant of up to $50,000 to match, dollar for dollar, any personal donations we receive up to that amount.  So, any gift you make will be doubled! (but only if you donate!)

We are hoping that we can count on you to assist, as you are able.  All donations are eligible for a charitable donation tax receipt. You can send us a cheque, send an e-transfer or donate at the non-Gala Gala.  You can also donate electronically through our website at www.slsc.ca by going to the ‘Donate Now – Canada Helps’ link, found at the bottom of the home page screen, or via the link below.

We are working out arrangements to allow for donation of shares, which can be an extremely tax effective way of making a donation... stay tuned for details.

Non-Gala Gala

The non-Gala Gala will be on July 27 at the club.  Entry will again be free, with hors d’oeuvres and an open bar.  However, sitting right in front of the bar will be a donation table where you will be able to contribute what you can to our capital campaign for the docks and receive a tax receipt.  You will also be able to bid on items in the silent action that will be part of the event. If you have something you would like to contribute to the silent auction please send me a note at commodore@slsc.ca
