Dear Sailors, Families of Sailors, and Friends of the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club:

After a few false starts, it seems like Summer is finally right around the corner.

On July 4th we will begin the 60th season of sailing at SLSC!  (A cause for celebration, about which more later!)

Before getting into the details of the program for the summer ahead...

Summer Schedule of Events

Mid-Ontario Regatta
Deferred from last year, as a result of the domino effect of various conflicts arising from the staging of the PanAm games in Toronto, we are again hosting the Mid-Ontario Regatta ("Mids") the weekend of July 23/24.

Our Mids will be the District 3 (Ontario) laser and Radial Championship Regatta, and Ontario Sailing’s Provincial Championships in the Laser, Radial, Club 420 and RS Feva – so we are anticipating a good crowd of racers descending on Sturgeon Point.

As in the past, we will be seeking beds and/or places to pitch tents, for our visiting sailors.  If you are able to host sailors in tents, or masters sailors/coaches in beds, please let us know by email:

A Truly Gala Gala!*

As the club celebrates its 60th year we feel it fitting to host a suitably auspicious event to honour its diamond jubilee!**

On August 6th, you are invited to join us for a Roaring 20s-Themed Party at the Sailing Club. Channel your inner Gatsby, or Daisy, and enjoy the live entertainment, silent and live auctions, and an abundance of food and drink.

For further details, click the image above, or the Reserve Gala Tickets Link, below.

We encourage you to share the details of this event with everyone in your circle of acquaintances.  We would particularly like to see as many former SLSC instructors as possible return for this party!

Funds raised at the event will support the purchase of new sailboats, and other facilities renewal.

*As distinguished from our previous "non-gala Galas"!
**It seems I may be the only one that likes that turn of phrase, so that is the last time I will refer to our anniversary that way!
Do you have items, services, or experiences,
that you might donate to the Gala Auction?

 Let us know!

Volunteers!

At last year's Civic Holiday’s post-regatta barbecue and prizegiving, we were able to relieve the DesBrisay/Gilchrist/Langran crew of the responsibility of looking after food etc. (Thanks to the efforts of Joan Young, Brad Wilson, Amanda Rix, Debora Morran, Jay Rix, and Ashley and Jeff Wilson)

We are looking for a few volunteers to assist again this year with the organization and food.  If you are able to assist, we would be delighted to hear from you! Email: Volunteers@SLSC.ca

Pictures

We have been gathering images of the Sailing Club through the ages. A few of them are posted on the "Gallery" section of our Gala Website .  If you have pictures of historical significance, we'd love to hear from you.  Submit them by email by clicking the button below, or let us know if you have physical pictures we might borrow and scan.

Used Furniture

Do you have any tired, but clean, old couches that you'd like to retire?  The club's collection of cast off couches has grown too ratty even for us, and we'd be delighted to hear from you.  At the same time, a gentle reminder that, while we appreciate donations of certain pieces of old furniture from time to time, please do not drop off furniture at the club without prior approval from the club.  Bearing the cost of sending anonymous "donations" to the dump, is a burden the club can ill afford.
Staying in Touch

Last spring marked the last mailing of a physical hardcopy version of the spring Commodore's letter; Nobody who received it indicated a desire to continue receiving hardcopy mailings... We know however, that there are people out there not on our email mailing list for various reasons.  If you know of someone who might have received a physical mailing in the past, would you please print this and share it with them?!

We continue to work to keep our email mailing list current (and in compliance with the new anti-spam legislation).  Through this process, some people may have dropped off the list.  We encourage you to forward this correspondence to your friends and family members (or share it on your favourite social media platform - links at the bottom of this email) in case they didn’t receive it directly.  If you are reading this, having had it forwarded to you, and wish to ensure you receive future correspondence from us directly, please sign up for our email mailing list.  Please be assured that you will not be inundated with email.

Even if you have signed up for the email list, please periodically check your profile, and keep it up to date.

Summer 2016 Sailing Program

Instructor Team

This year’s roster of 7 instructors, led by Meagan Woodman and Graeme Shea as Co-Head Instructors, includes five returning coaches from last summer, and the addition of two new instructors.  We are delighted to welcome Sara Gilchrist, and Cameron Riegel, joining the returning: Adele DesBrisay, Michael Robson, and Jacob Webster.  More detailed bios of all of our instructors will be posted on the club’s website when available.

Program Highlights
(first day of Club, July 4th)

Wet Feet –  in its fifth year, the Wet Feet program, designed to make our youngest sailors comfortable in and on the water in our Optimist dinghies, will be led by Sara Gilchrist.

Race Teams - New this year, and replacing our Afternoon Race Program of past years, is the formation of three distinct Race Teams.  We encourage interested sailors to join!  A Team membership fee will apply, and team practices will be scheduled by respective coaches during the afternoons.  Interested sailors in CANSail 2 or higher, may join one of the three Teams: Opti Race Team, Feva Race Team, or the Senior 420 Race Team.

Race Team members will practice two afternoons (three for the Sr. Race Team) per week, as scheduled by their respective coaches.  Team members will have their regatta registration costs covered by the club, and priority will be given to members, when participation in off-lake regattas is being determined.

Opti and Feva Race Team members can expect to enhance their skills, learn essential racing rules, and be introduced to racing strategies and tactics.

Race Team membership is optional, but members must commit to a minimum of two weeks.
  • Senior (420) Race Team – Our senior race team’s numbers will again be small this season, but we anticipate an enthusiastic participation in the regatta circuit, and mentoring of our younger aspiring racers.  Senior Race team  members will be drawn from CanSail 4, 5 and 6 levels and race 420s
  • Feva Race Team.  Eligible members of the team will be enrolled in CanSail 3 or 4
  • Opti Race Team.  Eligible members will be enrolled in CanSail 2 or higher
“Extracurricular Activities” Tuesday night activities (which have included games, bonfires and movies, in previous years), and Friday night dances will continue, led by the senior sailors. More information about these evenings, activities, dance themes, and special events, will be communicated, as the plans are developed, on the club website, in regular instructor email newsletters, and via Twitter.

Wednesday Night Races return! Please check the club web site for dates – we anticipate six nights of racing.  Race times and boats will be confirmed in the first week of club.

Pizza Lunch – Again included in Registration Fees, delivered to the club each Wednesday, and served by Christina Hall, our returning ‘Pizza Lady’!

Registration

A note regarding Fees:  We have managed to hold our fees unchanged since 2013.  Fees remain  $195 for each week of registration, following the first. Each sailor's first week registration cost will be $210 (which incorporates the $15 fee we had charged separately in the past, and offsets fees we pay to Ontario Sailing for each sailor).

As always, no one will be turned away because of financial challenges.  There are a limited number of bursaries available that Leslie Thomas will continue to administer on the club's behalf.  If you require assistance with fees, please speak with Leslie Thomas at (416) 234-5506 (Toronto) or at (705) 887-2821 (Sturgeon Point) or email in confidence to Confidential@SLSC.ca

Your Support

We are always thankful for the generosity and support of our community.  As you know (and are reminded at least annually!) we rely heavily on your financial support to maintain and upgrade our facilities and sailing equipment.  You may donate online at any time via the link below, and receive a tax receipt immediately.  This link is also available on the club’s website.

SLSC's Board

Often overlooked is that SLSC's operations are overseen by a board comprised entirely of volunteer members.  I'd like to extend my thanks to all of them for their emmense, and largely anonymous, contributions to keeping the Club going:

Steve Crighton
Marie Day
David DesBrisay
Hugh DesBrisay
Richard Farr
Christina Hall
Greg  Taylor
Storey Wilkins
James Wisener
We are working to ensure that our website, www.SLSC.Ca,, and our facebook page, is kept up to date – please check regularly for updates, and information about upcoming activities and events.

I look forward to seeing many new and familiar faces on the water, and around the club, as we celebrate 60 years of creating enduring summer memories!

Yours very truly,

Commodore, SLSC
