The temperature is slowly rising and so are our spirits. This past month has been all about self care for us. Taking time to ourselves to finish long brewing projects, refuel emotionally and zoom out.
It's the reality of the art (and parent) life that you must have strong reserves to survive and ideally thrive. So while it's hard to slow down it's vitally important for all involved. When in doubt, zoom out! as the great Ram Das once said.
Below are some things we've been doing and contemplating during this down time as well as the latest Art of the Week.
We hope you are keeping calm and enjoying some sun too!
Art of the Week #6
Is it art? Is it design? Does it matter when it looks this good? Click the link below to check out this Tin Can beauty in our store.
You can also see all our previous Art of the Week works via the archive links under the intro. They are all available until sold.
Niko and Rhea have had the pleasure of house sitting for a family friend up on the Kapiti Coast for the past month. They have used that time to chill, play and go on many beach walks.
One of our favourite games at the beach is picking up plastic and sharing our finds using #Take3fortheSea a global movement for collective ocean responsibility. We love the ocean and treasure hunting plastic is a great accompaniment to growing your special shell collection. Every bit counts, even the tiny colourful bits as these often end up in seabird or fish stomachs and leach chemicals more readily than white or black plastic.
We have plans to share our new ocean plastic focused project with you in the coming months. We've been doing lots of research on the issue. If you are keen to know more a great film now showing on Netflix is Plastic Ocean.
Kemi has been using his solo time in the studio to grow his illustration portfolio and complete some overdue personal projects.
This illustration of a boat seen in Wellington harbour was completed the week of the Matariki whale visit so he added her in. In a funny twist the owners of the boat saw the image online and recognised their beloved Whale Chaser! They had also spotted our visitor from the deep that same week. A very happy coincidence.
You can see more of Kemi's drawings (including new portraits of Niko and others) in his portfolio
We are excited to go on a behind the scenes tour of the WCC happy valley landfill next week.
This Plastic Safari will be further fodder for our oceans plastic project. We'll be sharing the experience in our Facebook and Instagram Stories. If you have any questions you'd like us to ask let us know!
We have 2 spaces free if you are an ultra waste nerd like us! Join us! We are booked for Friday August 10th at 10am. Get in touch.
