Just A Heads Up...

SNIPPETS ON SELAS - November

In sixth grade, the students have been working together to plan and design t-shirts for the 6th grade class. The 6th grade t-shirt design process encourages the students to engage in team-building and grade-wide bonding while taking pride in their work and their school.  At the conclusion of this process, when the final products arrive, the excitement the students have in their creation demonstrates how working together with a common vision promotes a sense of accomplishment and builds self-esteem.

In seventh grade, some advisory time over the last month has been used to implement social and emotional lessons provided by Robert Crown about drug abuse.  These activities, reinforced through health class as well, promote helping our students learn to make positive and healthy life choices.  Topics covered include reasons for drug use and assessment for risk, talking to peers about drugs, and the importance of talking to adults about drugs. In addition, the entire 7th grade went to a team-building course called Irons Oaks.  Although these days were unseasonably cold, the kids did an amazing job working together to solve the challenges that they faced as teams.

The eighth graders have written letters to veterans and are sending them to the V.A. Hines hospital.  Crafting these letters to our beloved veterans helps our students become more socially aware of others and connects them to real people that have given so much for all of us. In addition, the students will be participating in various anti-bullying activities throughout the month during advisory.
This week, students at all grade levels will be encouraged to write “Turkey Notes” to the staff at CHMS. This will be an opportunity for students to express gratitude towards people who have impacted their lives in a positive way. Please see the attached samples of our turkey notes and consider writing one to someone important in your life!
