Dear wonderful CHMS Families,
As you may recall, our amazing PTO sponsors our staff appreciation award, the “Best of the Nest” with a premium parking spot for the winner! Staff members nominate each other based on:
- Who has inspired you?
- Who is making you a better staff member?
- Who is making your day more enjoyable?
- Who is doing great things for kids?
- Who is consistently in your corner?
- Who is implementing innovative strategies in the building?
This award continues to demonstrate the inspiring, kind, and giving staff we have here at CHMS. The incredible words that are written toward each other in response to the thoughtful actions taken are inspirational.
This month, Ms. Lisa Albano (6th grade LA) was our lucky winner! A few comments shared about her were:
She is a great friend and colleague!
She is amazing with how she works with students and teaches them responsibility with caring for each and every kid.
Lisa is so dedicated to her work and to her students.
Thank you, thank you, Lisa, for leading our Excel class and looking out for those students and communicating so well with the teachers. You are amazing!!!
On a side note, Ms. Albano typically is one of the first (if not the first) teacher here each day, so she kindly gave her parking spot to a colleague!
Congratulations again to Ms. Albano and all of our nominated staff members!
Dr. Levi Brown
Principal, Clarendon Hills Middle School

The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World
October 5, 2021 – 7:00-8:30 PM
Jamil Zaki is a professor of psychology at Stanford University and the director of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Lab. Using tools from psychology and neuroscience, he and his colleagues examine how empathy works and how people can learn to empathize more effectively.
In The War for Kindness, he weaves together the latest science with engaging real-world stories, offering us a revolutionary perspective on empathy and how to develop it as a skill. He shows that kindness is not a sign of weakness but a source of strength. With warmth, wit and straightforward exercises that can be swiftly implemented, Dr. Zaki shows audiences of all ages how to change their professional, student, creative and personal relationships for the better.
The webinar, presented by the Community Speaker Series, D181 and the D181 Foundation, is free and open to all. If you are interested in attending, please register in advance by using the registration link HERE.
Can’t attend the live program? Please register and a link to the recording will be sent to you. For more information, visit d181foundation.org or see the event flyer HERE.
Our 2021 Phantom Ball approaches- It’s the most anticipated non-event of the year!
Every fall the PTO holds a fundraiser to enhance and enrich student educational programs, support community service events, and to provide opportunities for parent education and networking. It keeps funds raised by the PTO where they matter most – our school! It’s easy as (pumpkin) pie!
Please look for an e-mail on October 5 with a link to our 2021 Phantom Ball!

Top 3 Helmets of All Time:
3. Darth Vader’s (would be no. 1, but visibility takes a hit in scoring with his overly dark eye protection)
2. Viking (can’t beat the awesome horn accessories, great at football games too)
1. Your very own bike helmet!! (best fit, great vision, actually works)
There are so many great reasons to ride a bike: They offer fun, freedom and exercise, and it’s good for the environment. Remember to always wear a helmet because accidents have no planned schedule. Here are a few more tips from our very own Clarendon Hills PD so that students and families can be safe while biking. For more information on properly fitting a bicycle helmet click HERE!
Thank you for purchasing CHMS spirit wear! Not only will you look good, but your purchase will help fund many of the wonderful endeavors our PTO does to continually improve our CHMS community.
Delivery update: due to a few bumps in the road (even CHMS Spirit Wear is subject to supply chain issues) our deliveries are delayed. We anticipate orders the second week of October. Remember, orders are going home with students through Advisory so be sure to check those backpacks!
We would like to thank the families who donated snacks and drinks to “Stock the Staff Lounges.” The CHMS teachers and staff are incredibly grateful for your kindness and generosity. Our next Stock the Lounge will be in January/February 2022.
