A Note from Dr. Brown

Greetings CHMS Families,

As this school year is coming to a close, I’d like to add a few comments to recognize our three CHMS staff members who are retiring. Their amazing service to our students, colleagues, and community have left a lasting impression, for which we are forever grateful!

Vivian Beach began working in D181 back in 1998 and taught both Language Arts and Spanish. A few words from her colleagues: “Vivian Beach has been an incredible source of inspiration and kindness for me, the 181 staff members, and her lucky students. It is through her mentorship and friendship that I have become the teacher I am today. She deserves an incredible retirement filled with travel, music, art, food, and fun.”

Lorie Lowey served as our 6-8 grade PE teacher and was hired by D181 in 1986. Her colleagues share that: “Lorie would always explain the needs of the students and how I could lend a hand. Her sense of humor is always appreciated and I felt like we could speak candidly and with realness about anything. Lorie is a teacher who knows each and every student’s name and something about him or her. She goes out of her way to make connections with her students. She is the ultimate team player, stands up for her beliefs, and is fiercely loyal.”

Maria Hernandez has worked with us as a custodian both at CHMS and HMS and was hired at D181 in 2000. A few things her colleagues had to say about her: “Maria is such a positive, happy person who I will miss seeing every morning. Thank you for all of the hard work and dedication keeping CHMS and D181 such a warm and welcoming place for students and staff over the last 20 years.  We especially appreciate the effort that you undertake each summer overseeing the deep and extensive cleaning of the school, in such a short time frame, getting it ready for the first day back in August. The custodial crew at CHMS and Buildings & Grounds will miss your presence and leadership as part of the CHMS family.”

Thank you Viv, Lorie, and Maria for all that you have done for everyone these past years! You will be sorely missed!

Turnabout Spend Update

With our school year coming to a close we wanted to send out an update on the status of all the items purchased through our Turnabout fundraiser approved in April.

  • To date, the school has received all the approved individual flexible seating. Hopefully your children have told you about the exciting new rocker/ball chairs that have been delivered to many of the classrooms.  The high top table and chairs for three classrooms have been ordered and will be delivered to the school June 13.
  • The staff lounge was painted, cleaned and furniture installed in late May with the finishing touches applied over the last couple of days (see pictures below). The staff has enjoyed their new lounge and workroom on the first floor and we have learned they LOVE chocolate. Hint, hint for end-of-year gifts.
  • Lastly, Dr. Brown is working on the location and installation of new bike racks. They will be placed over the summer and ready for the 2019-2020 school year.

It’s been fun to be able to get so many of the approved purchases in the school before the year ended.

Thank you again to all the parents who graciously donated to CHMS to enhance the learning environment.

6th & 7th Grade Parent Volunteers Needed for Graduation Dinner

Attention 6th &​ 7th grade parents! We are asking for your help so that our 8th grade parents can enjoy graduation day with their family and friends. ​If you can offer one or more hours of assistance, we would greatly appreciate your help.
Friday, June 7
12 noon – 2:00pm ​= Set-up (NEW TIME)
6:15 – 7:45pm = Serve dinner
7:30 – 8:30pm = Serve dinner
Clean-up starting at 8:30 pm

Important Reminders for 8th Graders

Thursday, June 6 will be the last day of school for 8th graders and their schedule will consist of:

  • 1st period-cleaning out lockers
  • 2nd period-Encore/PE
  • 3rd-4th periods-watch 8th grade video and movie/outside games
  • 5th period-graduation practice and class photograph
  • Lunch (12:25-12:55 p.m.)
  • 6th-7th periods-Ice Cream Bar (provided by PTO)-ingredients attached; distribute and sign yearbooks
  • 8th period-Encore/PE

Graduation will be Friday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Hinsdale Central High School-gymnasium and will last approximately one hour. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and students should plan to arrive no later than 5:10 p.m. Appropriate dress is requested under their gown (no shorts, T-shirts, tank tops, athletic shoes, or jeans). Immediately following the ceremony there will be a dinner/dance at CHMS in the cafeteria and gymnasium until 8:30 p.m.

For our planning purposes, please make sure you RSVP for the graduation dinner and dance extended to Wednesday, 6/5 (here).

Summer Reading Lists

As a reminder, CHMS teachers/librarian have selected a list of recommended summer reading to challenge, motivate, and entice students’ reading appetites. They are asking students to read at least one of the Summer Reading books over the summer. Language arts classes will begin the year engaged in discussions centered on the book/s your child has chosen to read.  Please click on the applicable link  6th Grade7th Grade8th Grade to view the CHMS Summer Reading Lists for the grades your child will be entering.

Reminder! 2019-2020 Necessities

When registering for the 2019-2020 school year, did you remember to purchase PE clothes (shirts and shorts), PE locks, heart rate monitor straps, science goggles, yearbook, and for 8th grade only – a graduation robe? 
If you haven’t purchased these items, you can log back into skyward: Once logged in:
  • Go to the fee management tab. 
  • To the right of the student’s name, click “Add a Fee.”
  • You will then see a list of fees to choose from. If you wish to purchase more than one PE shirt or pair of shorts, you  will need to add them once for each shirt or pair of shorts you want.
  • After you have added all the items you want, click on “Purchase.” This will take you to schoolpay where you can pay and complete the transaction. 
We strongly encourage you to pre-purchase your items online.  You will be picking up your purchased items at Back-To-School Day (no cash sales will be made on that day). If you have any questions, please call the Administrative Center at 630-861-4900.

The Parent List: A Valuable Resource for Parents

DID YOUR CHILD NEED HELP for an emotional, developmental, learning or health issue this past school year?

Did you work with a provider that made a positive difference in your child’s well-being and you would recommend to another parent?

Please consider posting an anonymous review on the Hinsdale Central High School PTO resource called The Parent List.  It currently contains nearly 80 positive reviews on area health care providers that have helped D86 and D181 children with issues that include: anxiety; depression; school avoidance; eating disorders; insomnia; substance abuse; peer relations; stress; autism spectrum; ADD/ADHD and more.

The list is a central location to find information on doctors, therapists, support groups, in-patient and out-patient programs, tutors, nutritionists, books, and holistic medical approaches that other parents in our community have found helpful for their child.

The submission of reviews is closed to D86 and D181 parents only. Your fresh review of a resource may make all the difference in the future to a child attending school with your own.

Hinsdale Model UN

Hinsdale Model United Nations (H-MUN) is a charitable Model UN Conference from July 13-14, 2019 targeted at anyone entering grades 7-12. Model UN is a simulation of the United Nations. Students will represent a country in a conference and attempt to solve world crises from their nation’s point-of-view.

H-MUN is open to students with all levels of experience, as the conference provides extensive training for new delegates, as well as complicated simulations for experienced ones. H-MUN is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in trying out Model UN for the first time to see if they like it, wants to prepare for high school Model UN, or wants to refine the Model UN skills they already possess over the summer.

H-MUN is also a great way to gain experience for Hinsdale Central‘s Model UN Team. The majority of the H-MUN staff attend Hinsdale Central. Additionally, students will be able to hear from Mr. David Jacobson, the Former Ambassador from the United States to Canada, as our guest speaker. All net proceeds go to UN agencies to help assist with humanitarian aid.

Endless Appreciation

To Mr. Mike Bale (Art Teacher) for the countless hours he dedicated to creating this year’s 8th grade video, which for the first time includes personal photos submitted by our students.

To Dr. Levi Brown and Erick Jones for their active support and partnership with our PTO throughout the year.

To the CHMS Office Staff, including Diane Torti, Mary Marsilio and Adrienne Renwick; Mike Keane (Building Engineer) and Mary Youngman (Nurse) for all that they did to constantly assist our PTO events and activities this year. We couldn’t have done it without you!
