Just a Heads Up... 

GOOD LUCK GRADUATES
 
Congratulations to the Clarendon Hills Middle School Class of 2014!!!  Although they will head off to various high schools, they will always be connected by the amazing experiences that they have shared with the staff and students at CHMS!  We thank all of the staff for their dedication and enthusiasm in helping our children develop into thoughtful and inspired young adults.

PTO TECHNOLOGY PURCHASES
 
The District initiated Google Chrome Book Pilot was approved June 1st which means the PTO will be purchasing 90 Chrome Books and 3 carts over the summer for a total cost of $32,000.  The goal is to have them up and running on the first day of school Monday, August 25th.  One cart will be allocated to each grade level, which will allow the students greater access to the Internet, as well as Google docs for writing projects.  This will also free up the more expensive Mac Books for projects that require the multimedia elements available on those devices.
 
The PTO also donated $8,000 in early May for 12 new ipads & cases that were added to the three existing ipad carts.  This brings each cart up to 15 iPads which makes it much easier for a class of 30 to share one cart. 
 
 
MILLION WORDS PROGRAM ROCKS

 
What do 35 8th graders, 30 7th graders, 35 6th graders and 13 adults have in common?  They all read more than a million words in this reading incentive program that ended last week.  The results were fantastic!  Two students each read over five million words and eight students and staff members each read over 3 million.  Amazing!!!  CHMS as a whole read 3,662 books for a grand total of 292,719,069 words.  Congratulations to all the participants!  Well done!  We are looking forward to next year where we hope to set a record of over 300 million words. I know we will do it!
 
 
FINAL D181 SCHOOL CALENDAR APPROVED FOR 2014/2015
 
The final 2014/2015 Calendar was sent out by Dr. White, on May 28th.  Check the PTO website at
www.chmspto.org for final dates.  The first day of school has been bumped back to Monday, August 25th and it will be a full day.  Check it out!
 
SUMMER READING BOOKS
 
If you placed an order for summer reading books and your child has not received them, please contact Sally Duffy, MRC Director, ASAP at (630)861-4800 #4871.
 
If you missed the order deadline you can still order the books online at Anderson Book Fair’s website (
www.andersons.indiebound.com), click on the tab labeled “School Reading Lists” then CHMS to select your books.  Anderson also offers over 6,000 other titles and CHMS will receive 20% of all online sales YEAR ROUND, so order ALL of your books 24/7/365 from Anderson and please remember to reference CHMS at the checkout.  Spring Book Fair flyer books can also be found on the Anderson website under the title “Spring 2014 Categories”.
 
 
THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS & DONORS FOR A GREAT YEAR
 

WOW!!!  It’s hard to believe all of the wonderful things that have been accomplished this year.  We owe a HUGE thank you to all of the talented parent volunteers that have made this PTO year such a success, as well as all of the families that generously supported our fundraising events throughout the year!
 
Special thanks to our AMAZING Executive Board  ~ VP’s Susan Charlier and Iria Irlanda, Treasurer, Suzanne Austin and Asst. Treasurer, Marnie Joy, Secretary Liz Speziale and VP’s of Communication Jill Loughlin and Tania Kuropas and of course staff liaison Theresa Doering, as well as Griffin Sonntag and Joni Sherman.  Not only was everyone on the Board incredibly dedicated, but it was fun!  We also appreciate the numerous volunteers that chaired or served on over 20 committees throughout the year.  We appreciate all of your time, energy and great ideas!  Some highlights for the year were:
 
*The new PTO website & newsletter which was setup and maintained by Jill Loughlin & Tania Kuropas.  It has greatly improved communication for all;
*Fantastic monthly speakers throughout the year to further the PTO’s mission of providing meaningful parent education;
*Adopt a family holiday event chaired by Devon Allen;
*The Eagle Cafe spirit lunches organized by Tanya Andoniadis;
*The new Eagles’ Nest School Store organized & managed by Susan Charlier;
*The 1st Annual Pizza Wars/Eagle Jam Event chaired by Tanya Andoniadis with support from the current and future Executive Boards;
*The $40,000 raised to fund new technology: 90 Google Chrome Books w/carts and 12 new iPads/cases to round out existing carts;
*The Gym Floor Campaign spearheaded by parent Mike Loughlin that raised $125,000 for the installation of a new WOOD gym floor this summer!!!
 
We appreciate each and every one of you that took the time out of your busy schedule to help make this year a success!  We greatly appreciate those of you that donated to the Gym Floor Project and look forward to installing an amazing new wood floor over the summer.  This project alone would have been an amazing testament to the spirit of the CHMS families, but to think that we did this in addition to all of the other things is downright AMAZING!!!  Have a fantastic summer!

New First Day of School at CHMS!

 
The D181 Board has approved a new date for the start of school in the fall.  The first day of school at CHMS will be a full day on Monday, August 25th.
 
 
Back to School Day - DATE CHANGED
 
To ensure that we all enjoy our summer as much as possible, CHMS has changed the Back to School Day date.  It is now set for Tuesday, August 19th.  6th grade students and parents may attend anytime between 8 am - 11 am.  7th & 8th grade students and parents may attend anytime between 12 pm - 3:30 pm.

Promote your Business and Help the PTO
 
The Directory Committee is now collecting advertisements for the 2014-2015 CHMS PTO Student Directory.  This is a great way to promote your business and support CHMS at the same time!  For more information, please contact Melinda Haggard at chmsptodirectory@gmail.com
 
 

Save Box Tops all Summer Long!
 
Starting this fall, the PTO will collect Box Tops for Education.  Every Box Top is worth TEN CENTS!   Advisories will have a friendly competition this fall, so please start saving now!

Congratulations and Summer Wishes
On behalf of the District 181 staff, we share congratulations to the Class of 2014 eighth grade graduates and to all of our students for an outstanding school year! We hope your family enjoys a safe and happy summer break, and we thank you for your partnership with our schools. We will be welcoming nearly 600 students for our Summer Learning Program that begins June 12, and our team of staff will be completing a variety of important projects in the schools and at District Office. This will be the last regular e-newsletter of the school year; e-news will resume in August. Please also watch in August for a message from Superintendent Dr. Don White, which will share a highlight summary of the work we complete this summer and welcome you to the 2014-15 school year.
 



 

Spring Parent Survey Results
Thank you to our families for completing the Spring 2014 Parent Survey! We had more than 800 responses, which will provide strong data for District and school improvement work. A comprehensive survey analysis will be discussed with the Board at a later date; however, to ensure the results are shared with the community in a timely manner, they will be posted on BoardDocs as part of Monday’s Board meeting, and they will be posted on our website on Saturday: www.d181.org > Board > Surveys / Engagement

 


 

Board Meeting Preview
The next Board of Education meeting is on Monday, June 9 at Elm School (7pm). Among other items, the meeting agenda includes network management contract renewal, a transportation bid, MRC furniture replacement bid, Board agenda planning, PRESS policy discussion, and spring parent survey results. In addition, the Department of Learning will present information on MAP assessment data. Community members can visit BoardDocs online beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday to access the reports on each of these agenda items. There will be a Board meeting on June 23 at Elm (7pm); there are no Board meetings currently scheduled in July.
