First Quarter Halfway Completed
Halfway through the first quarter, my where does the time go? The students (and staff) are in very good routines of building relationships, rigorous studies, and experiential learning. With the end of September upon us, this means our cross-country season will come to a close at tomorrow’s conference meet at Blackhawk Junior High School in Bensenville. Girls’ basketball tryouts will be Wednesday and Thursday after school and our Clubs and Activities Fair (for students and parents) is Thursday from 3 to 4 pm. This event will promote the clubs and other activities that CHMS has to offer our students. Different from elementary school, these clubs are drop in and do not require sign-ups or lengthy commitments. The Clubs and Activities Fair will allow students to not only find out about the clubs, but also what days and times they will be offered. The PTO sponsors this activity and will be providing support and popcorn.
Advisory
The middle school programming at CHMS includes a daily advisory period. It is during this period that a smaller group of students (between 7-18 unless for space purposes, two teachers share a larger advisory) and a teacher or other certified staff member work on team building, goal setting, perspective taking and other social-emotional learning areas. We have worked to integrate this social emotional learning for academic success (SELAS) within our other classes on a daily basis because we believe that learning should not occur in isolation but generalized across many disciplines. We also feel that the small advisory time is important for the students to develop a daily connection with this staff member. New this year, each student has an advisor who is his/her teacher. Logically, this makes the most sense, but previously, we were unable to make this occur in our schedule. Advisory is a very important part of the education of whole child that occurs at CHMS. The advisory period is 5 minutes long to begin the school day on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, advisory is 25 minutes long and also occurs at the beginning of the school day.
Buses
If there are concerns on any of the buses, please contact Mrs. Sherman (jsherman@d181.org) or me (gsonntag@d181.org) so we are aware of the situation. We work diligently to maintain a safe and appropriate environment on the school buses but cannot fix a problem we do not know is happening. In addition, please do not enter the bus lane to the east of the school off of Chicago Avenue between 2:45 pm and 3:00 pm, as our students are loading onto the buses to go home. Remember, it is unlawful to pass a stopped school bus that has its red stop arm extended. Together, we can make pick up and drop off at CHMS a safe place for our students.
