Just a heads up....

February PTO Meeting
PTO Meeting this Wednesday, February 12th at 9 am in the MRC.  Featured speaker is Linda Renzi, a licensed, clinical social worker who will help you understand how to connect with your teen or preteen.  It’s not just your child that’s pushing away.  Learn why it’s normal and HEALTHY!

Split Schedule Thank You
Many thanks to our fantastic CHMS families for the flexibility and patience that you demonstrated during the recent split schedule arrangement with Hinsdale Middle School.  The HMS PTO has issued a thank you letter to the local press.  In case you missed it we are including it at the bottom of this newsletter.

CHMS Night at the Bulls Game
Friday, February 21st the CHMS boys and girls 8th grade basketball teams have been given an exciting opportunity to play on the United Center Court just before the Bulls take on the Denver Nuggets at 7 pm.  Join the fun by purchasing your ticket through school for $60.  If you are interested please complete the form on the PTO webite (CHMSPTO.org under the school news section) and submit with your check to Mary Marsilio in the office asap.  Questions can be directed to Griffin Sonntag at 630-861-4804.

Robert Crown Sex Ed Follow Up from January PTO Meeting
Earlier this month Robert Crown Center for Health spoke at the PTO meeting about the Sex Education Program they teach at CHMS. There were some questions that we needed to get answered from the Staff.
1. Robert Crown teaches the 6th grade sex education class during science class. There is no permission slip sent home for this presentation.
2. The 7th ( not 8th) graders see the Robert Crown Teen Sex Progam. It is a two day program offered during the quarter that your child has health class. A letter and permission slip are sent home for this program, so it is your decision if you do not want your child to participate.
If you have any additional questions please email the Health Teacher, Diana Branca, at dbranca@d181.org. We will follow up with Robert Crown to get the suggested talking points between you and your child for after they see the presentation.

Heroin Community Speaker Event
For those that missed the drug talk at the October PTO meeting, our speaker Bob Berlin, DuPage County Deputy States Attorney, has made us aware of another great opportunity to educate yourself about what’s going on with the massive heroin epidemic.  Former NBA player Chris Herren will be speaking on Wednesday, February 19th at 7:00 pm at Glenbard North High School.  The event is open to the public and sounds like it will be an amazing night.   See the flyer at www.chmspto.org for details.

Registration for 2014/2015 School Year
Reminder that the registration for next year will come home with your student this Friday, February 14th and will be due back no later than February 28th to allow the District adequate time for staffing and planning.  Proof of residency will be completed through last years tax bill and current utility bills.  PTO materials/signup will also be included.  We look forward to seeing many new faces involved with the PTO next fall, so please join the fun.  It’s a great way to meet parents from the other feeder schools.

Eagle Cafe Opening Soon
The Eagle Cafe will offer fun, quarterly lunches for students and staff from local restaurants such as Jimmy Johns and Chipotle.  The 3rd quarter lunch will be held on Friday, February 28th and 4th quarter lunch will be on Friday, May 23rd.  Order forms will be sent home next week with your child, as well as be available on the PTO Website.  Orders must be paid for in advance.

Letter to the Hinsdalean, February 3, 2014

On behalf of the HMS PTO, the Executive Board would like to express its gratitude and appreciation to everyone in our school district and community who made possible the successful response to the complex situation at Hinsdale Middle School over the past few weeks. This crisis could only have been addressed through the efforts of many people working toward the common purpose of restoring a healthy learning and teaching environment. We thank the D181 administrators and School Board who worked overtime to thoughtfully and quickly put a plan in place to address conditions at HMS while enabling our students to return to school on a split-day schedule. Although it’s never easy to please everyone, even in the best of times, the decisions the administration and board reached proved to be the best solutions we could envision. To the CHMS staff, PTO, students and parents, thank you for so generously welcoming our teachers and students into your building. We were truly impressed by how easily you adapted your school and schedules to accommodate HMS.  Our own HMS staff, who attended board meetings, voiced their concerns, and wholeheartedly supported the board’s plan, executed flawlessly against a short timeline in extraordinary circumstances. You taught by example and showed our children how to persevere when the unexpected disrupts daily life. And finally, to our HMS students, we are immensely proud of the character and determination you displayed—taking it all in stride and making the most of a new learning environment.

Kathy Adelmann & Karen Choi, HMS PTO Co-Presidents
