Just a Heads Up... 

Final PTO Meeting May 14th – Celebrate a Great Year & Finalize Technology Plan
 
Join us for the final PTO meeting on Wednesday, May 14th at 9:00 am in the MRC.  The topic is “The Top 10 Things You Wish You Had Known Before Your Child Started High School”.  We will be joined by a group of experienced HCHS moms who will help middle school parents understand more about what to expect during the high school years.   HCHS Boosters Club will give a brief presentation on the opportunities they offer for parents.
 
We will also discuss our plans for the estimated $35,000 that has been raised by the PTO this school year.   Learn more about the Google Chrome Book Pilot that the District is currently running at CHMS and HMS.   Ask your child if they have used the Chrome Books in any of their classes?  If the pilot is successful the PTO hopes to purchase 90 Google Chrome Books and 3 carts for a total of approximately $31,500 at the end of May.  These devices will be up and available to your students when school resumes in August.  They would be an AMAZING addition to the current technology at CHMS and a fantastic tool for the Writers Workshop Model that was implemented by the District several years ago.
 
Finally, we will ratify the proposed Executive Board Slate (See PTO website for slate) for the 2014/2015 school year and enjoy treats provided by the CHMS staff who want to show their appreciation to our parents for a successful year!
 
Summer Reading Book Order Forms Due by May 15th
 
Remember to turn in you child’s summer reading order form/payment by this Thursday, May 15th to the MRC.  Save yourself the hassle of scrambling to find the list and books in August!  The grade specific order forms can be found on the PTO website (
www.chmspto.org).   Remember that the MRC earns 20% of all orders.
 
If you would prefer to order the books online please go to Anderson Book Fair’s website (
www.andersons.indiebound.com), click on the tab labeled “School Reading Lists” then CHMS to select your books.  Anderson also offers over 6,000 other titles and CHMS will receive 20% of all online sales YEAR ROUND, so order ALL of your books 24/7/365 from Anderson and please remember to reference CHMS at the checkout.  Spring Book Fair flyer books can also be found on the Anderson website under the title “Spring 2014 Categories”.
 
8th Grade Happenings – Note Date Change for Rehearsal Lunch
 
1) Graduation Practice/8th Grade PTO Sponsored Lunch - Mark your calendars that the PTO will provide a Jimmy John’s lunch to the 8th graders on WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4th after they complete graduation practice in the CHMS gym.  No need to pack/buy lunch that day.
 
2) 8th Grade DVD orders due by this Friday May 16th – Give your child a priceless keepsake of their years at CHMS.  Order the 2014 CHMS 8th Grade Documentary & Slideshow DVD.  David Vachlon and Jake Youngman (a CHMS grad) in collaboration with CHMS teacher Lisa Albano have filmed students and teachers to talk about their memories and experiences at CHMS over the past three years.   The DVD costs $20 (Checks payable to CHMS).  Order forms can be found under the 8th grade tab on the PTO website and need to be returned to Lisa Albano - Room #321.   All proceeds will benefit the CHMS Angel Fund.
 
3) 8th Grade Graduation will be Wednesday, June 4th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Hinsdale Central High School gymnasium. Doors will open at 4:30 pm.  8th grade parents should have received an information packet with all details this past week.  Please contact Diane Torti , Secretary to Principals at

Vern Goers Shop & Share
 
Vern Goers Greenhouse will donate 10% from every purchase May 1st through May 31st to CHMS! This includes flowers, pots, perennials, annuals and more! It’s easy to help out. Print out the Vern Goers Shop N Share flyer from the PTO website or just mention you’re a CHMS supporter.  Vern Goers also offers FREE “Design your Pots with the Experts!” every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday in May from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.  Vern Goers Greenhouse, 5620 South Oak, Hinsdale.

Pizza Wars/Eagle Jam Recap
 
Thank you to Tanya Andoniadis and the small, but mighty Pizza Wars committee for their efforts in raising approximately $5,500 for the CHMS Technology Fund!!!   Thanks again to all of the families that supported this new event and had a great night out while supporting our school.
 
The pizzerias that DONATED 100% of the pizza were Aurelio’s (LaGrange), Baldinelli’s (Hinsdale), Domino’s (CH), Fox’s (Hinsdale), Home Run Inn (Westmont), L&F (Westmont), Mario’s (CH),  Pompei (Westmont), York Tavern (Oakbrook) and Zazzo’s (Darien).  They will be given ads in the 2014/2015 CHMS Directory, so please support their businesses and tell them why you chose them!
 
Staff Appreciation Week A Success
 
Thank you to Mary Youngman, Marcie Purcell and the fabulous Staff Appreciation committee for making the CHMS Staff feel very special last week AND for doing an amazing job making the staff feel very appreciated throughout the entire school year.  Nice job ladies!!!

May 19: Reception and Resolutions to Honor Retirees and Dr. Schuster
All families, staff, and community members are invited to attend a special reception prior to the May 19 Board meeting at Prospect School. We will gather beginning at 6:30pm to celebrate and recognize our D181 retirees and to also share our thanks to Dr. Schuster for her service as Superintendent. Thank you to our PTOs for their contributions of treats and refreshments! No RSVP is required. Attendees are invited to stay for the Committee of the Whole Board meeting (7pm), as the retirees are presented with Resolutions.  


 

May 12: Board Meeting at CHMS 
The next Board meeting is on Monday, May 12 at Clarendon Hills Middle School (7pm). Among other items, the meeting agenda includes the 2013-14 tentative amended budget, discussion on the technology replacement cycle, and discussion on a spring parent survey (more on the survey below). Community members can visit BoardDocs online beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday to access the materials for each agenda item. May 16: Summer Learning Program Registration Closes
Registration is now being accepted for the District’s Summer Learning Program. A link to the program catalog and the online registration form can be found on our website: www.d181.org > Schools > Summer Learning. Registration is due by Friday, May 16. Scholarships are available and will be awarded based on financial need; families interested in applying are invited to contact Jennifer Zock (630-861-4945). We look forward to an outstanding series of courses this year!
