Austin Huns Award 5 Summer 7s Scholarships


Austin, TX (April 25, 2018). – The Austin Huns are excited to announce the 2018 Collegiate 7s Rugby Scholarship recipients. After reviewing over four-dozen applicants, the club is thrilled to announce the signing of five high-caliber players to the Huns 2018 Summer 7s team. These recipients are expected to bring talent, experience, and skill to Austin Huns 7s team.

Scholarship recipients will be spending an excellent summer in the capital of the Lone Star State, Austin, TX! The Huns 7s team has been in the National Playoffs for the last two years and looking to expand their reach to great players and programs from around the nation. Scholarship recipients will be competing for a spot on the Huns Qualifier and TOLA teams.

Walk-On Scholarship

Due to the number of applicants, the Austin Huns have also allocated funds for a Walk-On Scholarship! The scholarship will be merit-based, and open to all players (current and new) and they need not be a college player. The grant will be merit-based and chosen by a committee of player and coaches. 

ALEX REES

University of Arkansas | Senior | Scrum Half


Alex Rees is as standout senior and captain from the University of Arkansas.  He is an Austin native who went to high school at Westlake. Rees is an energetic player who brings leadership, skill, vision, and passion for the game. He has helped lead the University of Arkansas 7s to 4 straight conference championships.

"I am most excited about the opportunity to compete for limited places in the squad, which I believe will make all of us better" - said Alex.

Daemon Torres

Life University | Junior | Second ROw


Daemon Torres is a sensational rugby player out of Life University. Torres is a local of Austin, TX having graduated from Stony Point High School in Round Rock. Daemon has played with Republic of Texas All-Stars, and an up and coming USA Rugby player who has played for USA U20s.  Torres is unique being that he is the only scholarship recipient whose primary position is in the second and third row of the pack. Daemon brings size, power, aggression, and some top-level experience to the Huns.

"What most excites me about this scholarship is the opportunity to play for one of my hometown clubs and grow my game where I first started my career." - said Daemon.

DMONTAE NOBLE

Kutztown | Sophmore | Hooker


Dmontae Noble is an exceptional sophomore out of Kutztown. Dmontae found rugby after converting from football as a standout athlete a George Mason High in as a Runningback and Outside Lineback, where he was Offensive Player of the Year, First Team Conference, and District. Noble brings strength, speed, and elusiveness, to the Huns. As a freshman Dmontae led his team with 23 tires.

"I am excited this summer to be playing kind of back at home and to be playing in a different coast, and to see what type of energy other tournaments that I’ve probably never been to bring" - said Dmontae.

RICKY CHESTNUTWOOD

Lindenwood| Senior | Wing


Ricky Chestnutwood is an outstanding senior at Lindenwood University. A multi-sport athlete in high school (track, football, basketball, and swimming) has molded him to be a stud of a player on the pitch. Ricky is a player who works hard every second he is on the pitch, always looking for work, always looking to make a difference. Chestnutwood has spent a year playing rugby in Australia and improving his skills. Ricky brings energy, pace, and a passion for winning to the Huns.

"I'm excited to be a part of the Huns culture, compete in high-level 7s rugby, and to explore Austin " - said Ricky.

ROSS NAVARRO

Texas A&M University | Senior | Center


Ross Navarro is an exceptional senior rugby player out of Texas A&M University-College Station. Ross is a native of Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago. He has helped lead Texas A&M Rugby to 3-consecutive National Tournaments, as well as, to their first D1A XV's National Tournament birth, since 2009. Navarro played U-19 for Trinidad and Tobago in the annual NACRA tournament now known as the Rugby Americas North Championship. Ross is an aggressive player who enjoys contact, a proven leader on and off the pitch, and a wealth of skills.

"I'm excited to play with the Huns and the other scholarship winners this summer. As long as I've been in the US, Austin has been like a second home to me, and I'm eager to play with one of the city's premier clubs. I've been to their games to watch of our Aggie alumni play, and I can't wait to share the pitch with them again." - said Ross Navarro.
The Austin Huns are incredibly excited to have awarded scholarships to these 5 outstanding players to join the team as it moves closer to the quest of becoming one of the top teams in the nation.
