Membership Matters

Our new Legion year (2022-2023) has begun so now is the time to restart your efforts to get your renewals in. It is also the time to work on your recruiting and reinstatements. The Second and Tenth districts did fairly well this past year but we can do better all i takes is some effort. is a great tool for managing your membership efforts, every post should be using it. Renewing via my legion is very simple and avoids having to mail the checks, cards and transmittals to Department and the wait for weeks before the national records are updated. If anyone is having trouble using the system please don't hesitate to contact me for help. In most cases I can walk you through getting started and using the various applications in the system. If necessary I will visit your post and render some assistance.

Don't forget , we will be holding our Membership workshop on Saturday August 20th at the Rockville Centre Post 303 located at 197 Maple Ave, Rockville Centre, NY . Registration starts at 9:00 AM. Please pass this information on to all your posts and members particularly Commanders and Membership officers.

I hope to see all of you on the 20th

Suicide Prevention Initiative Announced at NY Convention
The American Legion Department of New York is taking action to address and prevent veteran suicide and homelessness. The department announced its new initiative July 15 at its state convention in Binghamton – a $1.5 million fund that will award grants to state nonprofits that have programs directed at veteran suicide and homelessness prevention. The first two grants have been awarded.
2023 Membership Cards
Suffolk County Adjutant Jim Beecher is in contact with officials at the Department of New York. and asked at the State Convention as to where they were and was told there were paper shortages.

They will be mailed by National directly to the county commanders. We will advise when we learn where the membership cards are and when posts can expect to receive them. Please inform your members of this unfortunate delay.
On a Related Matter: PUFL Cards Delayed
Greetings from National Headquarters.

We’re contacting you to let you know that your 2023 annual PUFL card has been delayed this year due to issues with our paper supplier which has affected our production schedule.  At this point, we anticipate mailing the 2023 PUFL cards in the next 4-6 weeks.

Your membership record has been renewed for 2023 - - the issue is solely an unexpected printing delay.
Please accept our sincere apologies; we appreciate your understanding and patience.

Thank you.

Veterans Peer-to-Peer Program

The purpose of the Veterans Peer-to-Peer Program is to help our veterans resolve their problems by giving them a place to go for that help. To understand how our program works is simply demonstrated and explained in the following illustration. The veteran takes a glass of water (which represents stress) in his/her hand, and while standing up, holds it out straight in front. The longer it’s held, the heavier the stress gets. A veteran peer comes along beside the veteran holding the glass, and seeing the stress, the veteran peer makes the veteran comfortable by helping him/her to sit down in a chair. This also lowers the height of the outstretched arm holding the glass, making it easier for the peer to hold the arm with the glass and reduce the stress. However, there is still stress. Then along comes a clergy who takes the glass of water (stress) away. Thus, the stress is relieved.

The Veterans Peer-To-Peer Program Was Established by the Suffolk County, New York American Legion to Reach Out and Help Our Fellow Veterans
