County Commander's Message
I hope everyone is doing OK . The convention went well. 24 posts showed up. I would have liked more, but that’s one of the things I’m going to try to work on.  Also, getting more posts to show up at county meetings. We need everyone’s support. I’m looking forward to working with all the committees and getting things resolved. There are no county meetings for July and August. I hope to see everyone at the September meeting.
Info to follow. Everyone have a good summer.

God Bless America
Commander Steven Antonacci

Department of New York Visitation Schedule
Legionnaires and Sons of the American Legion,
Attached please find the 2022-2023 Visitation schedule. This years official traveling party will consist of the Department Commander David R. Riley Sr. and his wife Laurie, Detachment Commander Timothy S. Van Patten II and Department President Nancy Babis. None of the dignitaries have advised me of any allergies.

I do not have a complete list of the incoming County Commanders so please pass this e-mail on to them. If any County Commanders wish to change the date of their visit (as long as it is within their block and the other County Commander agrees) I don’t have a problem with that, just let me know ASAP. I am hopeful that things will return to normalcy this year and our traveling party will get to enjoy the hospitality and sights of all 62 Counties.

LogoSailAhead and the Centerport Yacht Club Partner for the sixth year for a Veterans’ Sailing day!
This year SailAhead will be having their 6th Annual Take a Veteran Sailing Event at Centerport Yacht Club!
Over the last two years, COVID-19 has prevented us from getting veterans out on the water at-scale. This year we are resuming our sailing programs.

The event date this year is Sunday, July 31st.
We will be honoring SPC Ryan James Day, an Army Ranger from the 2nd Battalion, 75th Army Regiment (along with all Our Mates). Ryan died by suicide at 21 years old, on December 15, 2014.

The day’s schedule is tentative, but will look something like this:
12:00 PM: Veterans and Guest arrive at Centerport YC for sign in.

12:00 – 1:00 PM: Ceremony will commence when guests and veterans are signed in. We will board the boats immediately after the ceremony.

5:00 – 5:30 PM: Weather depending, we head back to the docks where a BBQ and live music will be waiting for us.

7:00 PM: Event ends.

Veterans Peer-to-Peer Program

The purpose of the Veterans Peer-to-Peer Program is to help our veterans resolve their problems by giving them a place to go for that help. To understand how our program works is simply demonstrated and explained in the following illustration. The veteran takes a glass of water (which represents stress) in his/her hand, and while standing up, holds it out straight in front. The longer it’s held, the heavier the stress gets. A veteran peer comes along beside the veteran holding the glass, and seeing the stress, the veteran peer makes the veteran comfortable by helping him/her to sit down in a chair. This also lowers the height of the outstretched arm holding the glass, making it easier for the peer to hold the arm with the glass and reduce the stress. However, there is still stress. Then along comes a clergy who takes the glass of water (stress) away. Thus, the stress is relieved.

The Veterans Peer-To-Peer Program Was Established by the Suffolk County, New York American Legion to Reach Out and Help Our Fellow Veterans
