Congregation Beth Sholom's HaLuach: July 20 – 26

Israel Awaits...YOU!
CBS, Congregation Kol Shofar, and Congregation Ner Tamid invite you on an unforgettable Israeli adventure! The trip is filling up fast and limited space remains – the deadline is the end of this month, so sign up this week!
"In order to be a realist, you must believe in miracles."
- David Ben-Gurion
January 1: On our tenth and final day in Eretz Yisrael, we'll spend more time in Tel Aviv learning about and celebrating the foundations
of the modern State of Israel.
The Bay Area Conservative/Masorti Mission To Israel (December 22, 2016 – January 2, 2017) itinerary was thoughtfully designed by Rabbis Aubrey Glazer, Susan Leider, and Moshe Levin, who worked with Da’at Educational Expeditions to create an exciting and edifying trip. The trip is an exceptional opportunity for individuals, families, couples -- you name it!

The icing on the cake? Abraham Silver, the lecturer who visited CBS in February and proved incredibly popular, will be our tour guide!

Full details are on the CBS blog as well as the Da'at registration page.

Torah Byte:
Parashat Balak

How goodly are your tents, O Jacob, your dwellings, O Israel!” (Numbers 24: 5).

Renowned Italian author, Umberto Eco (1932-2016) once tellingly remarked, “I think a book should be judged 10 years later, after reading and re-reading it.” So how do we react each time we enter into our sacred spaces of worship and re-read and re-cite the renowned opening verse above?

Volunteer At SF-Marin Food Bank
This Sunday!

Have fun, meet other CBS congregants, and help the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank feed the hungry this weekend! We will be sorting, inspecting, and repackaging thousands of pounds of food during a short, two-hour shift. This is an all-ages event; kids ages 4 and up with parents are welcome to participate. (Please note that the work is not super strenuous, but it is super fun...and it's a wonderful way to introduce children to "doing Jewish.")

All are welcome to this event, but advance registration is required. If you are interested in participating or have questions, please email congregant Katherine Hollander (khollander [at] friedmanspring [dot] com).

CBS Family Preschool Marks End Of School Year

The CBS Family Preschool Moving On Ceremony took place last Thursday, July 14. It was a wonderful year for the preschoolers – full of learning, laughter, friendships, and exploration.

Katherine Friedman Barboni, Director of Early Childhood Education, writes, "I am in awe of the enthusiastic and dedicated teachers who tirelessly come in daily, providing the children with structure, learning, stability, kindness, silliness, and so much love. The children, too, are fantastic. They arrive each day ready to learn, teach, form friendships, and have fun. It has been such a joy getting to know each child this year. And the children’s families helped us to build a stronger CBS community by helping in the classrooms, hosting PJ Shabbat, celebrating birthdays, sharing in our joys, and supporting us daily. There is a reason why the word 'family' is part of our school's name – we truly are a family – and one that supports all of its members. We're so looking forward to our next school year!"

In the two photos featured here, we see the members of the Pre-K Hey class, who graduated last week, in both classic school portraits and fun "activity portrait" silhouettes. The children regularly use Koret Hall as a space to play and be physical, and the teachers asked each child to pick their favorite Koret Hall activity, then traced them doing it and cut it out. The children then painted them.

CBS Avenues
Take Second Place!

San Francisco Giants, watch your back! The CBS Avenues are coming on strong.

The Bay Area Torah Softball (BATS) league held its playoff rounds on Sunday, July 10. In the Semi-finals, our CBS Avenues faced off against the Congregation Emanu-El Mentches. We like the Mentches – who doesn't? – but we defeated them 14-2 and advanced to the Finals.

On the big stage, we played hard against Congregation Rodef Sholom. Despite our hustle and grit, after seven long innings, CBS fell to Rodef Shalom 8-3.

This season, the Avenues bring the silver to CBS. The real prize, though, is the fun had by all of the players on and off the field. To learn more about the league, visit the CBS website. Our fall season will begin August 28, 2016.

This Shabbat, July 23, our community kiddush lunch is sponsored by
David & Pauline Soffa in honor of Scott Horwitz & Missy Sue Mastel
in gratitude for all they are doing for CBS!

To learn more about kiddush sponsorship or to inquire about available dates, please email Executive Chef Jane Sykes or call 415-940-7123.
Coverage For Rabbi Glazer

Rabbi Glazer is traveling through Monday, July 25.
During this time,
please contact the CBS office (415.221.8736) for any
general or pressing pastoral needs (e.g., birth, death,
serious illness). We will connect you with a rabbi providing coverage.

If you need to schedule an appointment, please email his assistant, Ariel.

Shabbat Morning Zohar Meditation Cancelled

Please note that Rabbi Glazer's Shabbat morning Zohar meditation class is cancelled this week because of his travel.

Amanda Russell
At CBS This Weekend

This week, we welcome CBS Rabbinic Intern Amanda Russell back to our campus.

Amanda will lead our Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat service in the Gronowski Family Chapel as well as our Shabbat morning service in the Sanctuary.

CBS community members interested in exploring the musical meaning behind the prayers of our tradition are invited to participate in the Davvenen Leaders Co-operative (DLC), which will gather following our Shabbat kiddush.

Later on Shabbat, Amanda will guest teach Rabbi Glazer’s Psalms: A Shelter In The Word class (5 p.m.) – this week, we'll study Psalm 87 – before she leads Mincha minyan (6 p.m.).

On Sunday, immediately following morning minyan (9 a.m.), Amanda will hold a formal rehearsal for congregant singers who will be providing vocal support during our High Holy Days services. (As noted just below, this rehearsal requires an RSVP!)

Rehearse For High Holy Days

CBS Rabbinic Intern Amanda Russell is looking forward to making music and meaningful prayer with our community during the upcoming High Holy Day season!

There are several points in the service for which our leaders will call upon congregant singers to offer vocal support. Because it is important that both the Hebrew liturgy and the music be mastered, Amanda will hold a formal rehearsal this Sunday, July 24, immediately following morning minyan (at 9 a.m.). The rehearsal is a mandatory for those who would like to sing during the High Holy Days.

If you are interested in attending the rehearsal, please email Amanda to confirm your attendance.

Tzom Tammuz

This Sunday is Tzom Tammuz (The Fast of Tammuz). Please note that no food or drink (including coffee and tea) will be served or available on the CBS campus from first light to sundown.

The 17th of Tammuz is a Jewish fast day that commemorates the breach of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Second Temple. It also marks the beginning of the three-week period of mourning leading up to Tisha B'Av. In years such as this one (5776), when the fast date falls on Shabbat, the fast is observed the following day.
