The SDBE Briefing Paper

RE Special
The photo is one I took recently of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome from Pont Sant Angelo. It is right next to The Vatican with its museum filled with frescoes telling stories we find in religious texts – including Jesus’ life, as told in The Bible. Queues to visit the interior of these buildings are always long and people come from all over the world, representing all faiths and none, to visit, to stand in awe and to marvel.
In this, Interfaith Week, we hope that you are having some marvellous conversations in your school.

Nicola Coupe - SDBE Adviser for RE, CW and Spirituality
Don’t forget to make a grant application to the Bishop Wordsworth Education Trust (BWET) before 10th December!

November RE Hub Network meetings are underway!

RE in the Early Years The EYFS Framework 2021 strengthens the place of religious education through its explicit reference to ‘religious communities’.
Gill Vaisey is a specialist in RE for 3 - 7 year olds. She seeks to develop resources to help ensure that young children can meaningfully begin to understand the diverse and plural society in which they live.
This term she has published a set of books called Belonging and Believing. This is a new set of Worldviews books for infants, featuring families reflecting; Buddhism, Christianity, Hindu Dharma, Sikhi, Judaism, Báhá’í faith, Islam and Humanism.
Do you want to develop and deepen the way you use Understanding Christianity in your school?
You can either attend this course in July, and cascade learning back into your team at school, or you can book an HLP who has been trained as a UC trainer to come and deliver a twilight or series of twilights to your staff. Please contact to arrange it (cost is £250 for first session and £125 thereafter)
If you don’t yet use Understanding Christianity you can receive training online nationally. The next course starts in December. Details here

How do you ensure you have progress built into your curriculum?
Is assessment in your school an integral part of teaching and learning, where you check your students’ progress against your vision?

On behalf of the children and young people in your school, thank you for all you are doing to further this fascinating subject that inspires children and young people to say:
“Without RE, I think the world would be a more selfish place.”
“I love RE because it gives opportunities to find out about people’s faith and beliefs and to learn more about what I think too.”

Please do ask the DBE or your local Hub Leader for any support as you work with your colleagues to deliver The Church of England’s Statement of Entitlement for RE, which states:
Religious education in a Church school should enable every child to flourish and to live life in all its fullness. (John 10:10). It will help educate for dignity and respect encouraging all to live well together.
Do forward this email to anyone within or beyond your school - we are happy for people to subscribe from any organisation and are keen to build up the local networks for RE across Wiltshire, Dorset and BCP. If you would like more 'RE Specials', or have feedback on our Senior Leader mailings, please let us know by email.
