CORONAVIRUS UPDATE 2
As you will be aware, the Board of the Belfast Boat Club issued guidance on Friday 13 March 2020 re the operations of the Club.
In light of the statement by the Prime Minister on Monday evening and the consequent closing of numerous sports facilities including the Belfast City Council leisure centres, the Board considered it necessary to re-evaluate the situation. The Board have taken account current UK Government and National Governing Body advice, the risk profile of our services/facilities and the demographic of our membership and our duty of care to our members, visitors and staff.
The Board held an emergency meeting last night to discuss the situation. After a lengthy and detailed discussion, the Board voted unanimously to close the Club with effect from 5pm on Thursday 19 March 2020.
The Board are very aware of the disappointment and difficulties that this decision causes for our members and staff. Central to this decision was that the Board felt that it was not possible to introduce adequate safeguards to satisfactorily mitigate the inherent risks presented by Coronavirus and also our belief that we all have a collective and individual duty to try and reduce the spread of the virus.
We would respectfully ask all of our members to continue to support the Club. The Board will be bringing forward proposals in relation to membership in due course.
We also ask you to continue to support your fellow members on a personal level through this very difficult time. Many members are facing a period of isolation and ‘self-distancing’ and we urge everyone to keep in regular contact and to continue to provide support and friendship.
The Board remain optimistic for the future of Belfast Boat Club. We will continue to monitor the situation with a view to re-opening the club as soon as possible and we will be issuing regular updates to our members accordingly.
