RDS grants workshop - deadline approaching

The deadline for applications to attend the Grant Applications Workshop, run by the
RDS South West, is fast approaching.

This free one-day workshop is designed to help you make your application as persuasive as possible and will next be held on Thursday 6 November 2014 at Taunton Racecourse, Somerset.

Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR) Information Events

Three events will be held across England between 1 October and 4 November 2014. These events will offer an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR) funding stream. 

Professor Paul Little, Director of the PGfAR programme will be joined by staff from the Central Commissioning Facility (CCF) and a local PGfAR funding panel Chair to give a presentation followed by a Q&A session.

Opportunities for public members of NIHR Research Programmes
NIHR Research Programmes currently have opportunities for public members to work with their Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) Programme and Public Health Research (PHR) Programme. These are key roles on their committees which ensure that the public are actively involved in discussions and decisions about research. Public panel or board members help to identify and raise issues from the perspective of patients and the public that are relevant to the research.

The roles are:
  • Public/patient Member of the EME Prioritisation Group - closing date Monday 22 September
  • Public/patient Member of the EME Board - closing date Monday 22 September
  • Public/patient Member of the PHR Research Funding Board - closing date Friday 26 September

The Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR) - applications invited
The PGfAR programme is a national response mode programme that aims to provide evidence to improve health outcomes in England through promotion of health, prevention of ill health, and optimal disease management (including safety and quality), with particular emphasis on conditions causing significant disease burden. The following call is currently open:

Competition 17
Stage 1 Application submission deadline    7 October 2014 by 13:00
Notification of outcome of Stage 1 application    Mid-December 2014
Stage 2 Application submission deadline    17 March 2015 by 13:00
Notification of outcome of Stage 2 application    Late July 2015

NIHR Brain Injury HTC - launch of the Innovation Small Funds Competition
The NIHR Brain Injury Healthcare Technology Co-operative (HTC) is pleased to announce its first competition for pilot project funding (up to £10,000) for the early development of novel technology-based solutions applicable to the acquired brain injury pathway, from the initial acute event through to long term rehabilitation.

Applications are invited from academic institutions, NHS Trusts and SME’s. Preference will be given to collaborative projects that have a near term clinical impact or the potential to secure more substantial funding after proof of principle has been established.

Registration opens 1 September 2014
Deadline for applications Friday 24 October 2014
Confirmation of successful applications Friday 5th December 2014
Anticipated start dates expected Monday 5th January 2015

Public Health Research (PHR) Programme - commissioned calls
The PHR Programme funds research to evaluate non-NHS interventions intended to improve the health of the public and reduce inequalities in health. The following commissioned calls have been issued for research proposals, all with a deadline of 1pm, 18 December 2014:

14/180 - Interventions for hand hygiene to reduce incidence of infectious disease in schools
14/181 - Needle and Syringe Programmes (NSPs)
14/182 - Interventions to Reduce Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in Young People
14/183 - Interventions to reduce substance use by children and young people
14/184 - Social Marketing Interventions to Reduce Unintended Teenage Pregnancy
14/185 - Weight loss services for men
