Antigua takes some sunshine to snow bound Boston
Boston has received nearly 6 feet of snow in the last three weeks so it was timely for a team from Antigua to promote the destination at last weekend's Boston Globe Travel Show. The AHTA and the ABTA teamed up with partners from Cocos, The Inn at English Harbour, Sugar Ridge and National Tours to encourage visitors to escape the snow for a sunshine break in the Caribbean. The Boston Globe is one of the largest consumer travel shows in the US with over 20.000 attendees over 3 days.
Supervisory Management Training is back for March 2015
The AHTA is pleased to announce that we will be launching the ninth session of our successful Supervisory Management Training courses starting on March 2nd in partnership with the University of the West Indies Open Campus. The course will run for a period of ten weeks. As previously the course will be facilitated by Ms. Shirlene Nibbs.
Although we have seen nearly 200 industry employees complete this course we still recognize that there are many more candidates who would benefit from this training so we encourage you to register your employees for this next session. It is open to middle management, supervisors and employees aspiring to be supervisors. It is not reserved for hotels but open to all AHTA members.
There will be two sessions per week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5.15pm to 7.00pm. The course outline is in the attached document. The cost of the course is EC$600.00 per student.
The class is limited to 25 participants, interested persons should contact Anthea on the AHTA as soon as possible to sign up.
The Certified Pool Operators Workshop has been rescheduled for March 10th and 11th.
This two day workshop will be held at the ABHTI.
The cost is ES$950.00 for AHTA members and ES$1080.00 for non-members.We still have a few spaces available. Interested persons should contact Anthea in the AHTA office as quickly as possible so that course material can be ordered.
Upcoming Trade Shows
The ABTA will be attending the Philadelphia Inquirer Travel & Culinary Expo at the Valley Forge Resort on February 21st & 22nd. More details on this popular East Coast show can be found here. The same weekend February 21st & 22nd we will be heading to California for the Travel & Adventure Show at the Long Beach Convention Center. This is the largest of the Travel & Adventure Shows in the US with over 32.000 visitors last year. Last year Antigua received over 5,000 visitors from California making it one of largest source markets in the US. For more details on the Travel & Adventure Shows click here. The second largest largest of the Travel & Adventure Shows will be in Washington DC on March 7th & 8th. The ABTA has reserved a booth at this popular show, last year there were 21,000 visitors to the show. If you would be interested in attending please let us know.

Tuesday February 17th - Security Managers Forum. After a successful first meeting January the second meeting for Security Managers of tourism related businesses will be on Tuesday February 17th in the AHTA office.

Thursday February 19th - The monthly Financial Controllers meeting will be held at South Point Falmouth from 8.30am

World Water Day 2015: Antigua State College students tour Sandals Water Treatment Plant
As part of our World Water Day activities for 2015, Sandals Grande Antigua hosted 40 British Technical Education Council and CAPE Environmental Science students from the Antigua State College at its water treatment plant. The group, which gathered on Friday February 6, 2015, toured and observed the Resort’s Waste Water Treatment Plant under the direction of Operator Andrew Belgrave and Environmental Health & Safety Manager Andrea Marshall. Sandals Foundation partners with U Can Food Drive and Book & Ball Sports Academy

The Sandals Foundation has, for the fifth consecutive year, thrown its support behind the U Can Food Drive and the Book & Ball Sports Academy.

This year’s series of events officially kicked off this month with the opening of the traditional national basketball league where the food drive was launched. Full story here

The Hon. Asot Michael Minister of Tourism, Economic Development, Investment and Energy Empowers Staff with new mandate for Tourism
The Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Tourism, the Honorable Asot Michael made an official visit to the New York offices of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda last Friday. The meeting was hosted by Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN); Ambassador, H.E. Walton “Aubrey” Webson and Minister Michael were joined by the Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, (ABTA) Mr. Rohan Hector. Antigua and Barbuda’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Conrad Hunte was also in attendance.

Major marketing campaigns to raise profile of Antigua and Barbuda

The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, is anticipating a surge in bookings to Antigua and Barbuda from its primary source markets, as a result of new marketing campaigns being implemented to raise the profile of the destination.

A sixty minute television documentary on ‘Tourism in Antigua and Barbuda’ will air in the Italian Market, this February and again in March, following filming last week by Sky Italia. The feature will appear on, ‘Top Holidays in the World’, broadcasting on Sky Italia and Italian National Digital TV.

This programme follows a month-long British Airways marketing campaign launched in January, by the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, just in time for the peak of the 2014/2015 winter season.

CHTA signs MOU with Foundation for Environmental Education

The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) recognising FEE's Green Key and Blue Flag programs in the Caribbean as well as CHTA's sustainability initiatives.

The Memorandum of Understanding between CHTA and FEE has been entered to recognize the hospitality and tourism sustainability initiatives in the Caribbean brought forward by FEE through the Green Key and Blue Flag programs and by CHTA through the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST) and programs such as the Caribbean Hotel Energy Efficiency Action (CHENACT) initiative.
