Antigua and Barbuda promoted at Delta Vacations University
This weekend the AHTA was in Atlanta with the ABTA and Elite Island Resorts promoting the destination to the 2000 travel agents attending Delta Vacations University. This two day educational forum is one of the most important event's of its type in the US. Previously know as MLT University and held in Minneapolis the event has transferred this year to Atlanta, the home of Delta Airlines. The AHTA would like to thank all the hotels and attractions that provided us with promotional material. The visiting agents were able to go away with a comprehensive overview of the products available on the island.
Elite Island Resorts staff participate in beach clean-up activities
Staff members of the Elite Island Resorts in Antigua volunteered their early Saturday morning to clean beaches in observance of the International Coastal Clean-up activities on Saturday, September 17th 2016.
Galley Bay Resort & Spa, Jolly Beach Resort & Spa, St. James’s Club & Villas, The Verandah Resort & Spa and Pineapple Beach Club Antigua staff brought along friends and family members and joined forces to remove waste from various beaches in Antigua. More than 1,000 pounds of garbage (mainly plastic bottles, plastic bags, clothing and washed up debris) were removed from the beaches and bagged by the teams.
One of the staff members said: “When you see how much you have removed and how beautiful the area looks after clean-up, it makes you forget the hours and walking you put into it. We are very happy to have participated in this event and hope that others will team up with us next year.”
Sandals Grande Antigua cleans Sandy Island
Staff at Sandals Grande Antigua joined half-a-million volunteers around the world to promote proper waste disposal and environmental protection on International Coastal Clean-up Day, Saturday, September 17, 2016.. The team of volunteers cleaned up Sandy Island, off Antigua’s north-western coast which captures much of the debris that washes off the mainland. Hundreds of plastic bottles, glass bottles, nets and cans were recovered.
Wishing Well Inc. behind Secondary School breakfast programme relaunch
Wishing Well Inc. has given its commitment to a secondary school in Antigua to assist with a challenge that several schools face, but often are unable to solve due to the limited resources available. There is also the additional sensitivity around the topic as students are often ashamed to discuss their situation.
Every day many students start their day without having had a proper meal that morning or even the night before. It is well-known that poor nutrition could impact children and young adults’ educational attainment. More here

Police Week 2016 receives timely donation
The central organizing committee of the 2016 Police Week of Activities received a timely donation towards the various events slated for the week of September 11th 2016.
A spokesperson for Wishing Well Inc., said that the Foundation is pleased to assist with Police Week 2016. The donation is part of the efforts as a corporate citizen to put the spotlight on the hardworking men and women in the Police Force who go about doing their duties without much recognition for their contributions to the safety of the nation of Antigua & Barbuda. Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority hosts inaugural ‘Media vs Trade’ cricket tournament
The Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority held a ‘Media vs Trade’ cricket tournament on 7th September at Richmond Cricket Club. The day showcased a slice of Antiguan island life and drew on the country’s rich cricketing heritage to bring the travel industry together for some informal networking. Players included travel, consumer and trade media and hoteliers and tour operators including John Taker, Vice President at GTA Travel and Matthew Prior, Managing Director at TUI Specialist Division.  The inaugural event was a triumph with over 70 attendees and is set to be an annual event.   The match was played ahead of Antigua hosting the England team to an ODI in March 2017. The Bahamas elected Chair of Caribbean Tourism Organization

The Bahamas has been elected Chair of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), with the election as Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe.

The election took place on 15 September in Barbados at the organization’s annual general meeting during the CTO’s State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC). More here

CTO and CHTA working with regional partners to build climate resilience in the tourism sector
Regional tourism development agency, the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and regional hospitality agency, the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) today signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA) to join other regional agencies and institutions representing climate sensitive sectors as joint Tourism Partners on the Consortium of Regional Sectoral Early Warning Information Systems Across Climate Timescales (EWISACTs) Coordination Partners currently being spearheaded by the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH). Best Western Adds Antigua Hotel to Premier Brand
Best Western Hotels & Resorts is building upon its Best Western Premier brand, with its newest addition the Best Western Premier Hotel at St. Mary’s Court on the island of Antigua.
Once completed, the hotel will consist of 126 guestrooms, each with 40-in. TV sets, a mini fridge and free WiFi. The property also provides a fitness center, two outdoor pools, a spa and full complimentary hot breakfast. Full report here
