Antigua and Barbuda opens the Caribbean’s newest and most modern state of the art airport terminal
The twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda has opened one of the most modern international airports in the Caribbean. The 23,000 square meters new terminal for the destination, more than doubles the capacity of the adjacent previous terminal, making way for an increase in passenger use of the V.C. Bird International Airport as an all important airline hub, and the largest gateway to the Eastern Caribbean.
There are 4 jet bridges, and a unique, state of the art baggage sorting and scanning system. With faster immigration processing times, user friendly innovations and features, the near US$100 million terminal that opens for operation on August 24, will greatly improve the visitor experience, allowing travellers expedited access to Antigua and Barbuda, and maximum sun time on the destination’s 365 beaches.

International Coastal Clean Up Day
To celebrate the Ocean Conservancy's International Clean up Day the AHTA will once again be facilitating an island wide clean up of our 365 beaches. Any groups wishing to be take part and asked to contact the AHTA to lay claim to a beach or stretch of coastline.
AHTA facilitates the renovation of the Airport Welcome Arch
In 2007 an Arch was placed over the Sir George Walter Highway to welcome visitors to Antigua and Barbuda for the ICC Cricket World Cup. Eight years later the arch was looking a little tired and worn. To celebrate the opening of the new terminal at the V.C.Bird International Airport the AHTA facilitated the renovation and repainting of the arch. Funds originated from the AHTA Tourism Development Fund - Dollar-a-day programme.
AHTA signs new endorsement deal for 2016 In-Room guide

The AHTA has entered into an agreement with North South Net International Ltd (NSN) to publish two official AHTA endorsed publications:

 
  • A high quality glossy magazine (“Visit Antigua & Barbuda”) about the Antigua & Barbuda for exclusive distribution in the guest rooms of hotels, condominiums and other guest accommodations on the island; and
  • A booklet of maps (“Maps of Antigua & Barbuda”) for general distribution to stay-over tourists throughout the islands.
In return for this exclusive in-room endorsement, the AHTA will be sharing generously in the revenues generated by these publications. This income is vital component of the AHTA's annual budget and allows the Association to carry out its activities to support the membership. The publications will be marketed in early 2016 and published in November 2016.
ABTA North American Programme of Activities for the rest of 2015
The New York office of the ABTA has put together an ambitious and aggressive programme of activities for the rest of the year, attending a multitude of travel shows both consumer and trade, tour operator educational programmes and sales calls throughout North America. Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority appoints The Brighter Group
The Brighter Group has been awarded the UK PR contract for the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority following a highly competitive pitch process. With immediate effect, The Brighter Group will handle all UK media stories for the destination and implement campaigns throughout the year. The agency will be pitching and hosting a number of press trips on various themes and to events in Antigua and Barbuda, as well as working on individual stories, launches and exclusives.
One of The Brighter Group’s first projects is the promotion of the Lord’s Taverners 65th Anniversary Tour which was announced on 28 July. The tour which will take place in Antigua between 12-16 October will see cricketing royalty such as Mike Gatting OBE and Andy Caddick join celebrities such as Nick Hancock and Jonnie Irwin for five days of pro-celebrity cricket to be played on the stunning beaches of Antigua and Barbuda.

CHTA moving quickly in hub & spoke focused on local Associations
Emil Lee, president of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), reported progress during his first year in office as CHTA continues its evolution into a Hub and Spoke organization. He said he is pleased that the focus on strengthening the National Hotel and Tourism Associations (NHTAs) throughout the region is evolving quickly. He also cites a new era of public-private sector collaboration between CHTA and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) which has emerged as a point of optimism for the industry's future.
Lee recently visited with local CHTA members and Ministers of Tourism in various countries including Antigua, The Bahamas, Barbados and Belize. Full story here
Antiguan Hoteliers to reap benefits of CHIEF's Professional Development Sessions
The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) is offering two professional development courses for Antigua Hotel & Tourist Association (AHTA) member hotel employees designed to develop their performance analytics and leadership skills and add value to overall hotel marketing and operations. AHTA members and non-members can register for the Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA) workshop, which is jointly offered by the American Hotel & Lodging Education Institute (AHLEI) and STR (Smith Travel Research), and Florida International University’s (FIU) Leadership for Service Excellence workshop. Both sessions are offered on Oct. 2, 2015 from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at El Conquistador Resort, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, in Puerto Rico, prior to the opening of the association’s Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF).
