On October 9th at the Cosmopolitan Club in New York City, American Dance Abroad was honored by the Jonah Bokaer Arts Foundation. Speaking on behalf of ADA’s co-leadership, Andrea Snyder briefly addressed the Gala audience with these comments:

ADA just returned from Yerevan, Armenia for a project we created similar to what Jonah Bokaer and his company experienced in Bulgaria last year (to which over 60 International Dance Presenters were hosted to see the work of nine U.S. dance companies). This project was one of several that ADA has developed to strengthen the presence of U.S. dance internationally and to help dance companies build international relationships. This critical need was discovered missing since the waning of the 1970s and 80s dance boom when American dance had such a huge presence and influence overseas.

Over the past eight years of American Dance Abroad, we even more strongly believe that in this particular climate, dance (which has to language barriers) and all the other arts are critically important to build bridges and stronger cross-cultural understanding. The soft diplomacy that the arts provide really does matter! There is an urgency for what American Dance Abroad is doing. We've seen positive change and the revival of American dance Internationally by our opening doors, creating visibility and opportunities for U.S. dance artists and companies, strengthening international relationships, and combating artistic isolation.
