Leading a new era of international cultural exchange by exporting
American creativity and crafting global relationships.
March 2020

Coronavirus (COVID-19) ALERT

In light of the current worldwide concerns regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19), American Dance Abroad recommends that anyone traveling to another country check the U.S. Embassy website for that country for guidelines regarding entering into and exiting from that country as well as reentering the U.S.

Take note if you are traveling with foreign nationals (dancers or staff with passports other than U.S. passports). The country issuing the non-U.S. passport will determine the entry and reentry procedures for that person. At the moment, foreign national travelers from China, South Korea, Iran, and Italy require extra screening and may be denied entry into the U.S.

Below are links to some useful websites where you can find accurate up-to-date information and register your trip.

U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories

U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Register for STEP – the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.  (STEP) is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

FOCUS: USA at Dance Fest Skopje

American Dance Abroad is pleased to announce a North Macedonian edition of FOCUS: USA.

American Dance Abroad is pleased to announce a North Macedonian edition of FOCUS: USA. From April 6 - 11, 2020, Stephen Petronio Company (NYC), FIDGET (Philadelphia), and The Tribe with Shamel Pitts (NYC) will be featured at Dance Fest Skopje.

FOCUS: USA is a platform of American dance that highlights the diversity of American contemporary dance presented within the programming of a leading festival, and brings together the dance community of the host festival, the American companies, and invited international programmers. American Dance Abroad is honored to partner with Dance Fest Skopje, and together will welcome a select group of international programmers. The companies will each present a full evening performance plus a series of community-based activities, including teaching and workshops. After each performance, the programmers and local community will gather to network.

American Dance Abroad will provide limited travel support and lodging to programmers who attend. Interested programmers should reach out to Andrea@americandanceabroad.org.

Dance Fest Skopje was selected as our 2020 partner because the philosophy of the Festival mirrors many aspects of American dance.  The mission of the festival is to connect artists from different countries and cultures and provide them the opportunity to work together, creating a place where diverse national, ethnic and aesthetic styles of dance can find a common creative environment. This spirit of cultural exchange and diplomacy is also at the heart of what American Dance Abroad strives for.

Schedule for FOCUS: USA:
April 6         Stephen Petronio Company in the National Theater
April 7         FIDGET will perform at the Youth Cultural Center
April 8         Skopje Dance Theater
April 9         The Tribe with Shamel Pitts in the Youth Cultural Center

New Interactive Map Available

Flanders Arts Institute debuts new interactive map of train routes of Europe

In recent years, Flanders Arts Institute has been reflecting on new ways of working internationally in the arts with its research project, "(Re)framing The International.”  The hope is to inspire artists to travel more sustainably for tours, residencies, and conferences. Flanders has just debuted a new railway map with destinations that can be reached by train in less than 6.5 hours from Brussels - Midi train station.

As sustainability is increasingly higher on the agenda in the arts sector, this map offers an alternative for a number of destinations in Europe. Of course, it is not easy to go on residence or on tour by train. Certainly not if, for example, you have to play in different places in a short time. This new railway map is, therefore, only a first step in exploring possible routes and alternatives.

The interactive map can be found here.
