Newsletter December 2014

Hello everyone,

It's farewell to November and thanksgiving and welcome to December and Christmas, Hannukkah and Kwanzaa.  It seems that we are inundated with festivals and fabulous food at the moment.....I love it!

Ever wondered why December began with the latin 'dec' which normally means 10; decimal, decade etc.  Actually it used to be the 10th month until the romans added January and February, but it still kept the name!

December's newsletter brings lots of offers. The mini session offer continues for the final month (I promise :-))  so it's not too late if you want to get those family pictures for the holiday season.  In addition, if your struggling for ideas for Christmas presents, I'm offering a great gift voucher discount.

'For the Photographer in You' touches on how to get those starburst photos everyone loves, with a little practice, you could be creating your own.

Hope you all have a wonderful December and of course Happy Holidays.

For the Photographer In You - The Starburst

There is something magical about a starburst in photographs and if you know how to capture one, its a bit like catching a fairy just when you want one!

So what is a starburst?  It is just lens flare (light scattered by the lens in the camera) from the sun's rays shaped into a starburst pattern.  So how do we capture it?  These steps will help you create magical starbursts when you want them and also help to avoid them when you don't!

1. Stop your aperture down to between f11 and f22.  The smaller the aperture, the more diffraction you'll get and the more starburst you'll see in the photograph.
2. Try to obscure the sun a little bit, like behind a tree or mountain.
3. If the surrounding area is dark, the effect will be greater so early in the morning or late in the afternoon will work best.

4. Always be careful when photographing into the sun, that it isn't damaging your eyes; hiding the sun behind objects helps a lot with this.

And there you go!

For the more technical - the number of star points that a lens returns depends upon the number of aperture blades that the lens has.  If the lens has an even number of blades, it will produce that number of points, but if it has an odd number, it will produce double the number of blades.  The aperture also has an effect on the starburst.  For these photos, I used a Nikon 16-35mm f4.0 lens (9 blades) and an aperture of f22.

Have fun!
Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - Fall in New York

I am not a landscape photographer, but I had to share some of these photos from New York with you....yes they are the real colors, I promise I have not played with the saturation!
Quote of the Month

This is a special quote for December -

'Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away ' ~ Unknown

I think this quote has been around for a while, but I only heard it for the first time last week and loved it! and...I wish you all many moments!
December Project

See if you can manage some starburst photographs, when the rain clears that is!  I'd love to see them if you want to share.
