There is something about Bougainvillea that is so happy and beautiful!  It always reminds me of summer and warm weather!  Actually I've tried to grow it several times having been enticed by the lovely models in the garden centers.  Each time has failed though...its just a little too chilly here in winter.  The images below come from San Diego where you can see the plants are very happy!

The panoramic passion reminds us of the green East Bay hills and this month’s quote may make you smile!! ...keep on scrolling :-)

For the Photographer in You - Photographing Bougainvillea

With I find that being purposeful and photographing with intent is a great place to start when trying to capture images of a subject you are interested in.  But once you have directed the purpose, it is the heart that takes over and who knows where that will lead...right?

For these bougainvillea, I knew that I wanted a combination of detail and recognizable images, but I also love playing with camera settings to allow for the capture of more abstract representations. Sometimes it is hard to find the time to go and dedicate our efforts to getting photographs and better understanding our photography and tools.  I struggle with this too so I thought I’d share the steps that work for me.

1. Find a subject that you want to photograph better, this could be a person, place, still life object...absolutely anything at all.
2. Think about when in the day would be the best time to capture this subject.
3. Schedule something in your diary that is achievable.  Make sure to include time to prepare or travel to the desired location for photography.
4. Invest time in planning and being purposeful.  I.e. plan the will you photograph the subject?  Do you need extra equipment? Do you need props? What kind of images are you hoping to capture?  Look at other images of similar subjects perhaps from did they capture that image?  What kind of lighting are you hoping for?
5. Write planning notes and make sure to schedule anything that needs to happen before the actual session. This should include talking to any people that need to be involved.
6. At this point you should be excited about the session, you have invested time and energy and hopefully have created a purposeful approach to the photography...just go do it!!!

As as I am writing this, I am thinking that sometimes the reason we don’t just go and photograph something, is that we can’t figure out what we want the subject to be!  If this is the case....pick something that interests doesn’t have to be perfect! Something is better than nothing at all!

Have Fun!

Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - More Bougainvillea!

While I like true visual representations of subjects, I also love to play with the more abstract.  Below you will see a combination of the two in the recent photographs I took of a beautiful bougainvillea.
