Newsletter May 2015

Hello everyone,

So what do we have this month? Lets see...Kentucky Derby, 'no socks day!', 'dance like a chicken day!'  Where do these come from???  I couldn't resist looking into the dance like a chicken day - but didn't manage to find the origin or much history - who wouldn't want to be known for the creation of this day eh?  The music was created in late 1950 by an accordion player Werner Thomas.  Thomas performed regularly in a restaurant called Davos in Switzerland and he first introduced his composition in 1963....and apparently everyone moved in a way similar to chickens!  (Ref - So there you go.

Probably a more well known celebration in May is Mothers day and this year is celebrated on the 10th (although in some countries it isn't even in May).  This month's newsletter brings some great offers for Mom's and Dad's looking for alternative Mothers and Fathers day gifts.

The shot above is from the California Academy of Sciences ( - a great place to spend a day with the family.  Check out the shots from my fun cycling across the Bay Bridge and my thought as to what fun we could have with the old one!  Also, we embark on a new month 'For The Photographer in You' - onto more great stuff, read all about the forthcoming month below!

Don't forget my quote of the month at the end of the newsletter....I love this one!

Have a great May and as always, do get in touch if you have any comments or would like to find out a little more about anything in the newsletter.

For the Photographer in You - 'You're Smarter Than Your Camera!' - May - Help Shutterspeed and Aperture isn't Enough!
Remember the 'good ol'' films days which we used to buy 35mm camera film suitable for shooting at different 'speeds'? You could buy 100, 200, 400 etc and it was an indication of the sensitivity of the film.  Digital cameras have an equivalent setting which determines the sensitivity of the digital sensor it is called ISO.  My May blog 'You're Smarter Than Your Camera' will explore  when and how to change this setting and also cover some of its limitations.

I will also tune into some additional methods of controlling light including filters and introduce opportunities to use them and how to get around them.

Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - Cycling the Bay Bridge
I recently cycled the Bay Bridge with my Dad.  At the moment you can only cycle from Oakland to to Bueno Vista Island (and back :-)), but this summer you will be able to cycle the 5 miles to the city, and it will be well worth the effort!

I managed to get some shots of the demolition of the old bridge, which was spectacular…hopefully the pictures give you a flavor of the scale of the job.  I can’t help but think it would make a fabulous adrenaline playground with bunjies hanging off it and thrill seekers climbing the top of it – shame to go to so much effort to pull it down!
Quote of the Month

'You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something–your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path. And that will make all the difference.' ~ Steve Jobs 2005
May Project

Try to find some of the beautiful rose gardens that are in full bloom at the moment...Osage Park has a great display and Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek - photograph some of the flowers - they are spectacular!  I love photographing flowers and will try to post some images in my June newsletter.
And that's it for May!

Thank you so much for reading my May newsletter, do get in touch if there is anything you would like to know more about!

Happy snapping,

Tracey xx
