Newsletter April 2014

Reviewing my March newsletter reminded me that it was raining as I wrote it…and here we are again with April!  Is it true that the british always talk about the weather?  It seems that I am reinforcing that 'myth' :-)

This month brings us the birthday of Hans Christian Anderson and celebrating that, International Children's Book day as well as Easter and at the end of the month, Hug a Friend day!

As with most of the events that children love, and Easter is no different…there is a focus on sweets and sugar!  I know our girls are looking forward to the next event as soon as the last one has gone….  Easter eggs are not just fun and yummy, they represent an ancient symbol of new life.  As long as several thousand years ago, eggs were given as a traditional springtime gift.

April always brings a smile to my face because it is very often the end of the winter weather and the gardens burst into new life and color…….great for a photographer...hope it is colorful month for you as well,

Happy April!

Latest and Greatest

March was a busy month for me, I was photographing a lot of end of class performances at Kids'n'Dance, a performing arts school with locations in Oakland, Lafayette and Orinda.  Some of the classes were dance focused and some were musical theatre….it is amazing with all the other events in children's lives, how by dedicating just a small amount of time to this extra activity they perform so brilliantly!  It is one of my favourite aspects of photography and I was thrilled to be given the opportunity by the owners.  The directors of the classes do an amazing job readying the kids for the sometimes daunting performances that they put on for their parents….and both the kids and directors seem to enjoy every minute….not to mention the parents.  You can check them out at

For the Photographer In You - Photographing Flowers?

Here are some simple tips that will help you take better photographs of flowers -

Weather - unless you want a blurred effect, don't choose a day where the weather is going to include high winds.  Movement, especially if you are shooting close up can make getting that shot you want almost impossible.

Which flower do I choose? - often there are so many flowers to choose from and picking one from a whole field can be overwhelming!  Choose your flower before you try setting up, make sure there are no blemishes and that it is almost perfect.  Also make sure that it is the shape you are looking for….symmetrical shapes tend to sit better with viewers.

The background - This is key…to make your subject stand out.  Choose a background that is not cluttered and makes the subject stand out.  You want a contrast between the background and the flowers so that the viewer is not distracted by the background.

Composition - try not to have the flower in the center of the photograph, offset it to one side or another and try using the rule of thirds to place it.  If you don't know this rule….watch for future  newsletters :-)

And that's it for April!

Thanks so much for reading my newsletter and I look forward to hearing any comments you might have.

Best wishes,

Tracey xx
