Newsletter January 2015

Hello everyone,

Happy New Year!!!

January celebrates the opening of Ellis Island on the 1st in 1892.  More recently, we saw Apple introduce the first iPhone on the 9th of January in 2007.  The 15th in 1967 celebrates the first ever Super Bowl where Green Bay defeated Kansas City (35-10), and I could go on!

2014 was a busy year; it's hard to believe that my newsletter and my business has been running for a whole year now!  I have loved putting it together and really look forward to what 2015 will bring!

Thank you to everyone who was involved in my photography over the past year and helped me get the business off the ground in California, It has been a blast and I couldn't have done it without you!

January brings a great, new, 'refer a friend' promotion running; see below for details.  Also 'For the Photographer in You' outlines a developing process that may help you claim back your hard drive!

So without anything further...Happy New Year again and best wishes for a wonderful 2015. Look forward to seeing y'all!

I am always thrilled when clients love what I do and refer me to their friends and
family.  For January I would like to say a big thank you to anyone who refers me and offer them a $60 print credit for each confirmed booking!

For the Photographer In You - New Years Resolutions...and...Are Your Images Keepers?

Did you get a new camera over the holidays? Or maybe a new lens to add to your collection?  Daunted by the prospect of adding to your overflowing digital image collection?  The digital camera has brought so many advantages to the photography world, but selecting and culling the vast quantities isn't one of them!  So in closing 2014, I decided to outline a suggested process for slimming down your collection and getting your hard drive back :-)  It involves 3 passes of the collection you want to edit. Here goes...

1. After downloading your files.  View them in your software and decide in no more than 2 or 3 seconds, if there is potential in the shot.  This is to remove the no-hopers e.g. out of focus, poor composition.  Essentially things you can't do anything about.  You can do this by 'picking' the ones you want to keep.

2. This is a more detailed picking exercise and involves choosing photos over others that are similar.  Go through the 'picked' collection from the first pass and spend some time checking the focus and other aspects of the photograph to ensure that you are happy to keep it.  Use the split screen tool if you have one to rate one image over another when looking at them side by side.

3.  With one more pass through the picked collection, choose the ones that stand out the most and that you love.  These are the ones that you will develop further and use to share with others.

Notice, I haven't deleted any so far.  Once you have developed your favourites and have the collection you want.  At this point you should delete the unwanted ones, and this could be a couple of weeks after you first started the process.

I hope this helps a little, it certainly all takes time, but the key point to take away from this is not to try to do everything in one pass through your collection - it is sure to make your selection process slow and inconsistent.

Have fun!
Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - My Fall Princess

I had to share these photos of my little princess sleeping, smiling and generally lost in the autumn leaves.  Kids love leaves and it can be a great time to get some cheeky shots of them as they play!
