Newsletter November 2016

Good morning everyone!

November has arrived and brought very welcome rain along!!!  The hills are turning green..that never ceases to amaze me how quickly the grasses change color in the hills here!!

Rain has certainly brought it's challenges with scheduling shoots this year!!!  But where there's a will there's a way and the sun will come up tomorrow...and all those other wise sayings that we all know and quote fondly!

This months newsletter comes with a great November shoot for people who still want to sneak a family photo into their holiday cards this year..check it out!!

Also for the photographer in you is all about...yes, you guessed it, photographing in the rain and using rain to make your images more interesting!  My own camera fun includes some shots from the recent San Francisco Airshow...I highly recommend it!

Lastly, I have just set up my photography business on and would love it if you had a couple of minutes to recommend me on the website!!!  Here is the link -

Thanks so much for reading, enjoy the images and welcome to November!!

Latest and Greatest

The sunshine in the family images below was so gorgeous, I feel that the images could easily have been on a beach!  With the absence of water of course....they are all taken in the beautiful hills we have here in Danville.  We had a menagerie of tarantula's, horses and cows all trying to get into the picture.  Thanks so much to this lovely family for being such great sports on the day and especially for asking me to photograph your family!!

For the Photographer in You - Rain!!!

So if we're going to get rain...we may as well learn a little about taking photographs in it!!  In the photographs below I tried to capture the movement of the rain along with a more stationary object in the frame like a flower or leaf.  It was raining pretty heavily and I tried to choose places where the contrast between the whitish grey rain stood out against a colored background - green or purple.  The first image is at 1/320 of a second shutter speed so the rain isn't quite frozen stationary, but the drops are not as elongated as the other images which have slower shutter speeds.  In the last image I just experimented with rotating the one before seems to give it a surreal look and suggests that it is windy as well as rainy, even the flower looks like it is being blown by the wind!

Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - San Francisco Fleet Week and Airshow

If you've ever been to the airshow in San Francisco, you'll know that it can be crazy busy and dodging the crowds so that you can see the action can sometimes be challenging, not to mention parking or getting photographs.  I have a little secret that you must promise not to pass onto too many it from Treasure Island!!  the views are spectacular with Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge or the city as an unobscured backdrop.  It is both relaxing and mesmerizing watching the stunt planes and sailboats navigate the skies and seas (respectively!!)...until you hear the squeak....'can we go home yet?' :-)

I was tempted to remove the power lines from the first image here, but they are so perfectly parallel to the plane trajectory that I decided they make the image more interesting....what do you think?
Quote of the Month

I think this might be my second Steve Jobs quote...great one!
