For the Photographer in You - Indoor Models!!!

I was shopping with family in Danville recently and came across this amazing display of a model Christmas village.  I had my camera and asked if I could take a few shots...'of course!' was the response...yay....the easy bit :-)

Moving subjects, artificial light and not much of it...not wanting to spend a long time getting the shot and no other equipment other than my camera....Sound familiar!  Its a common problem...most of the time when we're trying to photograph friends, at a party or dinner.  So what can we do?  Well there are a few things you can try -

- Only allow objects in the frame that you want in the picture...try to avoid including anything or anyone included that isn't part of the scene.
- Rest your camera on something to allow you to use a slow shutter speed. That way you can increase the depth of field to allow more objects in the image to be in focus.
- Decide exactly what you main subject is and make sure it's in focus, because you probably won't be able to get everything in focus!
- Meter your camera for the available don't want to lose all the atmosphere to a nasty flash.
- Check the white balance (artificial light can result in awful color casts) you can change this during the editing process though.

And then a few things to avoid - as well as flash!! Slowing your shutter speed too much so you can't hold the camera steady enough....1/60th of second is the slowest for a hand held camera in general. Reducing the depth of field too much and not selecting exactly what you want in focus as with my second image below.  I love the Harley Davidson shop, but the depth of field is too shallow to have the people on the bike in focus as well as the shop...they are important to the image and so I would say that this doesn't really work!!! I'll just have to go back to take another few shots!!!

In case your wondering which gift shop it is - it's 'Presence Gift Shop' and it's really worth a look and even taking the kids in to see the display!!

Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - Fall Japanese Maple

I just love the fall colors and some of the trees are absolutely at their best right now!  A spectacular example is the Japanese Maple!   Now, I did photograph this before and probably included it in one of my 2015 newsletters....well done and thank you if you remember!!  As with any skill there is always room for improvement and here I am again! I have picked my favorite out of a range of styles of images....Enjoy the images and I'd love to hear any comments!
