From Clues to Conclusions:  Applying the Genealogical Proof Standard

To go from clues to answers for your toughest family history challenges, learn to apply the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS). This presentation will demonstrate how to arrive at a solid conclusion by defining and researching the question, citing sources, analyzing and correlating data, resolving conflicts, and answering the research question. Once you see the GPS in action, you’ll have practical new ideas for turning clues into real conclusions. Handout.

Marian Wood is a textbook author, an avid genealogy researcher for 20 years, and a frequent speaker at genealogy conferences and clubs. With a B.A. from City University of New York and an M.B.A. from Long Island University, she is also the author of a popular genealogy book, "Planning a Future for Your Family's Past."

More Upcoming Speakers

Mark your calendars for the following upcoming MGS speakers this year:
  • Saturday October 6, 2018:  speaker/topic to be announced
  • Saturday November 17, 2018:  speaker/topic to be announced

Win a free 6 month subscription to World Explorer

We will soon be pulling a name out of a bowl!  That person will be the lucky winner of a free 6-month subscription to, the World Explorer edition, a $99 value.

The names in the bowl will be all who've paid 2018 membership dues by Saturday May 19.

Our dues have not increased in many years. Single memberships are $25, family memberships are $30.  If you want a newsletter physically mailed to you, please add an extra $5 to cover mailing cost.

You can pay by cash, check or PayPal.  Bring your cash, or check payable to "Middlesex Genealogical Society", on Saturday May 19.  Or mail it to:  MGS, P.O. Box 1111, Darien, CT 06820.  You can also make a credit or debit card donation securely through PayPal on our Membership page.  You do not need to have an account with PayPal to do so.

As you know, MGS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.  All board members are unpaid volunteers.  Donations are used to pay our speakers and basic costs.  We run a lean ship to make ends meet each year, and keep costs as low as possible thanks to our volunteers.

Summary of Membership Benefits
  • Five speaker presentations each year at the comfortable Darien Library auditorium.
  • Four newsletters written and/or curated by our own Editor, emailed or mailed to you quarterly.
  • An annual Membership Card which gives you proof needed to access vital records at town and city record offices in Connecticut. (Note: Many CT towns restrict access to vital records searching. An MGS Membership Card makes things easier for you when you show up and may open more doors.  It is evidence you are a member of a state approved genealogical society as specified in CT Vital Records Access Laws. See link.)
  • Ability to post your own family story on the member page of the MGS website. You will have a webpage link to share with others and to be searchable on the internet.
  • Membership in the MGS Y-DNA Project (male only) at Family Tree DNA, including one-on-one help in choosing DNA tests and interpreting results.
  • Association with people in our local area who share interest in genealogy.
  • An opportunity to be on our board, to participate in running a vibrant organization, and to help others in genealogy research.  If you're a job seeker, board member experience can be an extra plus on your resume.

Join our board!  Why not you?

We have a need for new board members.

Being a board member is interesting, not a big time commitment, and fun. We are all unpaid volunteers with a passion for ancestry research and sharing our knowledge with others.

What do board members do?  In a word: everything.  Email, newsletters, membership, treasury, arrange for speakers, genealogy assistance upon request, facebook oversight and interaction, special projects that crop up during the year.

Come to any of our board meetings to listen in, decide if you're interested.  Our next board meeting is Monday June 4 at 7pm.  Or contact any board member by email or phone.

March 2018 Newsletter is available online

As a reminder, our last newsletter (March 2018), and earlier newsletters, are online here.

The Middlesex Genealogical Society (MGS) name was created years ago.  The original founders of our group lived in the Darien Connecticut area.  They adopted the word "Middlesex" because Darien was part of Middlesex Parish, Connecticut in colonial days.

Today, most members and friends of MGS live in Fairfield County, Connecticut.  The majority of our members today had ancestors who first settled in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.  Our genealogy interests lead to villages, towns and cities all over the world.

Why did I get this email?

  • You're a current or former paying member.

Either way, we're happy to keep you in the loop about new speakers and programs.  If you aren't interested, simply "unsubscribe" and we won't email you again.

If you're a guest, feel free to come again for free to any of our speaker events. We hope you'll find our programs so interesting, and helpful, that you'll become a member someday soon.  A $25 contribution spread over 5 speaker meetings is less than half the price of a movie ticket per speaker.
