Reminder: Our next speaker is Saturday May 18, 2019 at 2 pm

Join us on Saturday May 18 to hear our next speaker Toni McKeen at the Darien Library.  Doors open at 1 pm for informal conversation.  We'll start our program at 1:50 with general news, followed by our speaker at 2 pm.  Check our webpage in coming days for her handout.

Digging Up Cemetery Records

Toni will discuss tips on how to find your buried ancestors: when and where they were buried, various helpful internet sites and databases which provide possible clues, and then what to bring to the cemetery for a successful outing.  In addition, she will share two helpful charts: one to help you record your cemetery information, and the other to keep track of who is buried in which cemetery.

Toni McKeen has been doing genealogy research on her own extensive Italian family, her husband's Irish family, and son-in-law's German family for the last 30 years.  She is a popular lecturer at many genealogy societies in the New York, New England, and New Jersey areas.

Originally from Florida, Toni earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Biology from C.W. Post College on L.I. She has been married for over 40 years, and has two children and two grandchildren. Her training from her research background, while earning her degrees in biology, helped her to establish organized systems and charts for recording family information for herself and her students.

2019 Annual Membership Dues

If you have not yet done so, please bring your membership check for 2019 to our next presentation this coming Saturday.  The check should be written out to "Middlesex Genealogical Society" (not the abbreviation MGS).

Annual dues remain at $25 per person & $30 for family. We offer a discount if you pre-pay for two years: $45 per person & $55 per family.  We also offer a Lifetime Membership for $300.

Each year MGS strives to provide quality presentations, roundtable meetings, a quarterly newsletter, repository tours and genealogy research assistance.  Your dues ensure that we can continue with these offerings, as well as expand our services and programs in the coming year.  Click here for more specifics about the advantages of membership  and  here for a list of speaker presentations over the past 10 years.

In addition, we offer a complimentary one year Youth Membership for new members up to 17 years old.  So if you know of a young person who is interested in genealogy, please let them know of this complimentary membership.

Please note that new members are also required to complete our membership application.

We Have A Need For New Board Members:  How About You?

MGS is a volunteer organization.  At this time, our team is 8 people: Tara Forschino, Pamela Shea, Mary Lavins, John Driscoll, Steve Haywood, Rob Martinelli, Pete Kenyon, Sara Zagrodsky.  Sara joined our board this month.

If you're still working, or looking for a job, being active on a community board like MGS is resume-worthy experience and a great networking opportunity!

If time-commitment is your concern, it shouldn't be.  We meet 7 Monday evenings a year to plan and coordinate behind the scenes.  We share in the efforts, and no one does more than they have time for.

Family history research is one of the fastest-growing interest areas today.  At the same time, many long-standing genealogical societies are closing due to lack of volunteer support.  Help us ensure that MGS has many years ahead by joining our board.

You can sit in on any future monthly board meeting to decide if it's for you.  Our next meeting is Monday June 3 at 7 pm at the Darien Library.  Just come.

Due to ongoing construction, the main parking lot fills up quickly on weekends. You can park in the overflow parking lot behind the office building on Thorndal Circle (behind Nielsen's Flowers) and walk a short distance to the library.

Do you have a speaker or topic recommendation?

We are on the lookout for future speakers or topic ideas. If you've listened to an interesting history or genealogy research speaker recently, please let us know at mgsvolunteer@gmail.com.

Obituaries Index Project

The Darien Library is in need of volunteers to help index obituary listings from local newspapers back to the year 1900.  Their goal is to post online a comprehensive index listing of thousands of death notices printed since 1900 in Darien-area newspapers.  This way any person, any where, who is researching their Darien area roots can check the online list to see if a death notice has been printed on a person, or surname, they are researching.  If so, they can follow-up at the library to get a hardcopy of that death notice.  This is a personally enriching project, many hands needed to bring to completion.  Skills desired:  keyboard accuracy, an eye for reading large amounts of print from microfilm and actual newspapers, ability to work independently and in collaboration with librarians.  For further information, contact cwood@darienlibrary.org.

With over 110 members, something of interest is posted weekly.  If you have a specific question related to your own family research, this is a great place to ask it. We have members very experienced in different research areas, happy to jump in with suggestions and comments related to your question.

Be aware that our MGS facebook page is private, closed to the public. This means that posts in our group can only be viewed and accessed by members of our group. Why "Middlesex" in MGS?

The Middlesex Genealogical Society (MGS) name was created years ago.  The original founders of our group lived in the Darien Connecticut area.  They adopted the word "Middlesex" because Darien was part of Middlesex Parish, Connecticut in colonial days.

Today, most members and friends of MGS live in Fairfield County, Connecticut.  The majority of our members today had ancestors who first settled in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.  Our genealogy interests lead to villages, towns and cities all over the world.
