RELIEF FOR THE RAYS!
Our campaign to protect cownose rays from bowfishing contests has kept us busy but with rewarding results. It’s been very heartening how so many people have rallied for the rays, and we won the ‘Battle FOR the Rays’ when Governor Hogan signed into law a two-year moratorium against fishing contests that target cownose rays in Maryland waters!

Fish Feel began the campaign for the rays in 2015 after learning of their cruel plight. It has been a real team effort, thank you SO much for your actions to help the rays. This article, which will be published in the Summer 2017 issue of Pathways Magazine, details what’s been happening.

We’ve won the battle but the war’s not over yet. We are fighting for a permanent ban on these contests. The campaign is generating a great deal of media attention and public awareness of the plight of the rays: http://fishfeel.org/stop-savage-killing-contests. We’ll keep you updated through the Save the Rays Coalition.

HAWAIIAN FISHES NEED OUR HELP!
Over a million fishes and other residents of Hawaii’s coral reefs are conservatively estimated to be taken every year to be sold for personal aquariums outside of the state. The vast majority of the fishes who are taken are herbivores who are essential to the health of the reefs. Many are captured and transported by cruel methods, often starved for days before and during their long journey (see: http://tinyurl.com/y7uxcoac). From reef to retail, six fish perish for every fish sold. Survivors face life in a small, glass box, and most don’t live long there, either.

Senate Bill 1240 will end state-issued collector permits. Ninety percent of Hawaiians who responded to a recent poll are in support of the bill. It has passed six hearings, and now needs Governor Ige’s signature. Regardless of where you live, please urge him to sign SB 1240 into law: (808) 586-0034; https://governor.hawaii.gov/contact-us/contact-the-governor.

FISH CONCERNS GO INTERNATIONAL
World Day for the End of Fishing was initiated on March 25th, with creative events in Australia, Canada, Europe, Israel, and the U.S. “The World Day for the End of Fishing asks for the abolition of fishing and fish farming for fishes, crustaceans and cephalopods.” The event generated significant media, and also saw the start of the new organization, Toronto Fish Save.

Heartfelt appreciation to Animals 24/7 for the kind comments about Fish Feel in its recent article, "Concern for fish suffering rises worldwide." Historic efforts for fishes are covered, along with recent activism and accomplishments for fishes and crustaceans. Scientific findings about fishes are explained, and there is considerable discussion of the campaign against cownose ray bowfishing contests (see item #1 above) in this extensive article. "Suddenly voices are rising on behalf of fish" High time!

FISH FEEL OUT AND ABOUT
The 2017 event season is upon us, and Fish Feel has already been out and about. In April, we again participated in the annual Veggie Pride Parade held in New York City. Fish Feel’s Mary Finelli was a featured speaker at the rally. Video of the parade: https://www.facebook.com/theirturn/videos/1878498409067214/

Later that month, a number of activists represented our organization within the Plant-Powered Planet Protectors contingency of the People’s Climate March. (Time lapse video of the event.)

May 4th was a first for Fish Feel, with tabling at two events that day: the Baltimore Vegfest and the Celebrate Animals Fair by St Francis Flock. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers!

We are just getting warmed up! This Sunday, Mary will be speaking at the Washington, D.C. observation of National Animal Rights Day, and later this month we’ll be tabling at the Richmond Vegfest. Mary will also give a presentation at the Animal Rights National Conference in August and at the Hudson Valley Vegfest in September. We will also be exhibiting at those events, and at the Chester County (Pa.) Vegan Festival in August, at the DC Vegfest and the Asheville Vegfest in September, and at the New Jersey Vegfest in October. Very possibly at others, too! If you’re at any of these events please stop by to say hi.

FISH PRODUCTS WE SUPPORT (& VICE VERSA)
"What a Fish Knows: The Inner Lives of Our Underwater Cousins," is now also available in audio, Kindle, and paperback. Put it on the top of your summer reading list!

How would you love colorful apparel and an array of other items expressing appreciation for fishes and promoting veganism? Bessie VonMessenger is kindly donating to Fish Feel the funds raised from her Peter A. (for amazing!) Bloop collections. Thank you, Bessie, for being such a great friend to us, to fishes, and to all animals. Thank you very much!

HOW WE DOIN’?
The Fish Feel Facebook page has surpassed 10,000 Likes! Thanks to all who have helped get us there. Thank you especially for your compassion and concern for fishes. We recently added a review option to the page. Not surprisingly, the trolls have been visiting, too. If you’re on Facebook, please consider posting a review. We hope it will be a positive one!

Please remember Fish Feel in your charitable giving. We are an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 nonprofit and the sole organization devoted exclusively to promoting the recognition of fishes as sentient beings deserving of respect and protection.
