Traditional Midwives as Leaders in Healthcare!

Join Sebastiana and Angelina at #MANA19

Traditional midwives can and should be leaders in healthcare transformation in rural and remote communities (and every community). They provide culturally safe prenatal care, birth, and postpartum care. The decades of experience provided to the community by a reliable person of the community creates much needed trust, solves health disparities and is a sustainable model of care. We are so excited to welcome beautiful traditional midwives Sebastiana Vázquez Gómez and Angelina Martínez Miranda to the MANA conference this year.

Their desire is to share their knowledge with MANA conference attendees in order to help create sustainable midwifery practices. Their traditional practice of blessing the hands of future midwives is a blessing we are honored to receive. We will have time on Friday night after The Last Partera session to hear stories from Sebastiana and Angelina and we are making space available for them to be in story-telling and traditional learning forums throughout the conference.

MANA Conference Plug!

A few more reasons to join us in Austin

"To all persons involved with midwifery, I am a retired midwife who loved coming to the MANA conferences. The feelings of sisterhood and benevolence toward each other was palpable. From the beginning, one of MANA’s goals was to foster camaraderie among midwives, kind of a “united we stand” mentality. We had many foes back through our history, but never each other..." continue reading

"As a midwifery student, I’m looking forward to attending my first MANA conference. I think it provides an opportunity to learn outside of the textbooks, from true midwifery professionals and researchers. It is not every day students get to pick the brains of the authors of the publications we study..." continue reading

"For 20+ years prior to coming into midwifery I worked as a nurse. In those 20+ years I attended many conferences on various topics in various locations in the US and around the world. Never in all of those years did I feel a sense of community that I felt when I attended my first MANA conference 2 years ago in Long Beach. Everyone from board members to vendors and all of the midwives and students from around the country were so warm and welcoming… it felt like home..." continue reading

MANA'S New Director of Events

Hello! As the newest MANA board member, I am excited to be helping plan this year’s conference. I remember attending my first MANA conference as a student midwife 10 years ago. There were so many midwives of different ages, walks of life, and locations. Yet all had gathered in this place for a common reason, love of birthing families and a desire to serve them. It was a wonderful experience full of learning and camaraderie. In the last years I have closely followed our midwifery world. I understand the very real issues that cause anger and division. We have much to learn. As we at MANA step back to look at where the organization has been, we will be evaluating and looking forward to stepping into a place we want to be. Connection is important. All voices in all communities must be heard. For that reason and many others, I personally invite you to join us at this year’s conference. Come speak to colleagues, leaders, and upcoming midwives. Reconnect and rejuvenate! I look forward to meeting you, to listening, and to serving you in the position of Director of Events.
