FAM: Highlighting Role of Black Midwives; Increasing Birth Equity

To honor Black History Month, Midwives Alliance encourages midwives and supporters to learn about and elevate the contributions and history of midwives of African ancestry. The Foundation for the Advancement of Midwifery (FAM) is using social media to highlight midwifery students, practicing midwives, and those who have come before. Visit posts shared already on FAM's Facebook page and be sure to share widely.

FAM is also using this opportunity to further support the Giving Voice to Mothers Project of the Home Birth Summit. This study assesses how planned place of birth, race and ethnicity interact with the experience of maternity care in the U.S. FAM is working to collect the stories of 100 more women of color. Click here to learn more and share.

FAM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to midwifery in North America through education, research, public policy and promoting birth equity. FAM has granted more than $1,000,000 to more than 30 programs since its first grant in 2003. Program areas include critical research on the midwifery model of care and training programs for those serving vulnerable populations of birthing women, public education campaigns to college students and policy makers, and capacity building for midwifery education and licensing organizations.

Countdown to ICM!

Join us and keep up-to-date!

Midwives Alliance encourages all midwives, and especially our members, to attend the 31st Triennial Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives, June 17 - 22 in Toronto, Canada. Make plans now to join your sister midwives here in North America, at what is sure to be the event of the year, hosted by our dear friends in Canada!

We've created a Facebook event to keep you up-to-date. Visit often for Congress updates, and feel free to post and share with friends.

From ICM: The highly topical and relevant theme for the 2017 Congress is "Midwives - Making a Difference in the World". We have reached a time when attention turns to ‘what next’ after the 2015 Millennium Development Goals. As new global initiatives are being developed, one strong message emerges from the 2011 and the 2014 State of World Midwifery Reports and that is ‘midwives do make a difference’ in saving the lives of women and newborns and promoting good health.
