It is time to bring the sacred back to birth

A message from MANA's new President

New MANA President Vicki Hedley shares her vision of the art, heart and soul of midwifery that must remain at the center of what we do. "How can we, as midwives, create the change that is needed to hold space for what is essential about birth?"  Vicki believes that excellent, equitable and culturally sensitive care should be considered a basic human right. "It is time to reverse the birth culture that has stripped birthing people of their autonomy, their dignity and their joy."

Kimberly Seals Allers to be Conference Keynote

I am on a mission: to question, challenge, disrupt and then reimagine how we talk about birth and breastfeeding and then breaking down the many structural barriers women face in these areas. — Kimberly Seals Allers

In The Big Let Down  How Medicine, Big Business and Feminism Undermine Breastfeeding, author Kimberly Seals Allers looks at how systems in America conflict with breastfeeding. This book has been one of the most talked about new books this year!

We are proud to announce that Kimberly Seals Allers will be presenting our keynote: Centering Collaboration at #MANACAM17! Everyone who has heard her speak has raved about her presentations. She is a powerhouse who shares our values of community, support and education. Kimberley will challenge us to look at ourselves, our systems, and assumptions to better serve our communities. She will illustrate how collaboration across disciplines and in communities will benefit our clients and break down the barriers to breastfeeding that still exist for many.

Kimberly is widely considered a leading voice in the counterculture social movement in infant feeding. Last year her online commentaries on the social, structural and racial complexities of maternal and child health issues received over 9 million page views. Kimberly’s fifth book, The Big Let Down — How Medicine, Big Business and Feminism Undermine Breastfeeding, an Amazon best-seller, was published by St. Martin’s Press in January 2017.

Donna Martin Memorial Scholarship

A new scholarship honoring Treesa Mclean's beloved mother Donna Martin, a lifelong learner, teacher and mentor is now open for application.  To qualify you must be:

  • actively involved in a clinical internship
  • a single parent if school age children or younger, with at least 1/2 custody
  • a MANA member (this can be waived if there is great financial hardship)

From Treesa, "The best way I can honor my mother is to support another person, another single parent along their journey and to mentor them where I can."

This scholarship is really designed for single parents who are struggling to make midwifery a reality for themselves. Please visit our website to learn more about this opportunity.
